When I was in high school (I'm an incoming frosh now), I enrolled in a program with my local community college (Burlington County College) in which I could complete college level courses while still in high school and then transfer the credits to Rutgers. However, I've looked all over the internet and I can't find a concrete answer as to whether or not my dual enrollment credits will work for the pre-med prerequisite courses (ex. General Biology, General Chemistry, Calc I & II) needed for Med School. Also, If the credits do work, would it be recommended that I skip the prerequisite courses or should I just re-take them to get a better foundation? If someone could help me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

You should also inquire in the pre-med forum as well. The reason being is everyone there will likely tell you that medical schools look down on those courses taken at a community college versus a university like Rutgers.

If you’ve already completed them you should call the Biology Department to see if it transfers in. I would think you would be considered a transfer student if you had completed those in high school but then again they could count like AP credits or something.

In fact I would call the Health Professions Office first and speak to an advisor there. Ask them if you should retake them or not.

Med schools want to know you can handle science courses so it might be best that you take the class over. The credits might transfer over but med schools might not accept it so you might find out when applying to med schools you have to take bio again where it may be a hassel to fill in your schedule especially if you progress through your major you will notice that classes will have less sections and less flexibility for your schedule.

Call HPO to double check if you want but they will most likely tell you the same.

You cannot AP out of science courses if you’re a premed. In fact, that’s the world’s fastest way to get rejected from med schools. Although Collegeboard describes AP courses as “college level courses,” they really aren’t. Med schools are fully aware of that, and thus, you are required to retake these courses.

I mean, if you are dying to AP out, you may choose to take higher level courses right away from your freshman year, but nonetheless you’re still expected to take 2 semesters of bio, physics, calc, chem and orgo.

Does this apply for the PA program too?

I’m not so sure about PA, but I’m assuming it’s somewhat the same. Call Health Professions Office, and ask them for more details. Sorry!
