I am currently in my undergraduate degree program for Clarinet performance and plan on going to a conservatory for a master's in the same. Right now I work in a hospital and have recently toyed with the idea of also having a degree in music therapy to fall back on. My current school doesn't offer a bachelor of music therapy and I don't plan on transferring because of cost issues. Is it possible for me to go and pursue a Master's of Music Therapy with only a Bachelor's in Performance? If so, what kinds of classes should I take to prepare myself?

I was surpised to see that Berklee’s MA in Music Therapy does require a BA in music therapy for admission.

Check out Lesley over the river in Cambridge: <a href=“Clinical Mental Health Counseling: Music Therapy Master's Degree | Lesley University”>http://www.lesley.edu/master-of-arts/expressive-therapies/music-therapy/mental-health-counseling/ Please note they also have a low residency option, which means you would not necessarily have to move (Cambridge is expensive!).

I am sure others will give you other ideas.

SUNY New Paltz only requires a degree in music for admission:

Nazareth College in NY has an excellent program, including a masters, and your performance degree would be part of the process, but you also have to demonstrate proficiency on piano and guitar (which is pretty standard for these programs,as I understand it).

Cool beans! The piano proficiency wouldn’t be much of an issue for me since your required to take four semesters of piano here, but guitar may be an issue. Thanks all!
