I have spent a lot of time on the Music Theater site (daughter graduated with a BFA in 2017), and her younger sister is interested in Music Therapy. Any word out there on schools for that?
Nazareth College in the Rochester, NY area is a nice one if she wants a smaller school.
Seconding the Naz mention and also look at Baldwin Wallace near Cleveland. Both programs offer their students a lot of practical experience.
University of MN-Twin Cities has a very good program. The school and region is known for its medical work and the program piggy-backs on that. It’s small and has, I believe, a 100% placement after graduation in the twin cities area.
My D’s friend went to SUNY New Paltz for a Masters in music therapy.
If you google “music therapy programs” you will find a number of lists of programs.
Berklee at the grad level. Any chance she would want to do a music major for undergrad and then do music therapy later?
I would take a look at Lesley University in Cambridge. They have great programs in holistic psychology, and expressive arts therapies- including music.
Lesley is not a music school, obviously, but offers a chance to study music therapy in the context of holistic psychology and counseling if desired. I believe there is also the option for a general expressive arts major that includes music, dance, art, writing…but check the site.
When I was putting together a music therapy program for a music organization, which we were providing to hospice and other organizations, Lesley was a great resource, as was Berklee. Those are the ones I know about!
Look at the website of the American Music Therapy Association to find accredited programs.
My D attended Elizabethtown College. It prepared her well and gave her abundant clinical opportunities, helping her to pass the certification exam on the first attempt and put together an excellent resume.
Not sure where you are in the process, or where in the country you looking at, but my son auditioned and passed music therapy auditions (classical guitar primary) at Nazareth, Fredonia (both in NY), Slippery Rock in PA, Baldwin Wallace and Cleveland State (both in Ohio). And he got into Wooster (Ohio) but they do not do auditions until the 2nd year. All have their pluses and minus (he wanted the stronger music therapy program but with the ability to continue with guitar in a serious fashion) - ended up going to Cleveland State and loves the program and classes.
Marywood University is where my daughter attends. She is a senior now and has had a good experience.
Fellow Musical Theatre board mom here LOL. Check out Arizona State, They have a good program, a huge school of music, lots of clinical opportunities, and great scholarships.
Hi, I’m late to reply to this thread but Miami’s FROST School of Music has an incredible Music Therapy program. Ironically my older daughter auditioned for theatre as well, she’s at University of Michigan. Similar parenting paths!
