Many upperclassmen have told me about how difficult Duke is. Can any current students offer any input into this? How hard is it in general? I know it varies by major but any advice would help.

Humanities majors require lots and lots of essays and writing - if you’re into that stuff, then I say the courses are not too bad.

Science/engineering courses are obviously more test oriented, and you pretty much compete with other students for that A that you’re aiming for. Nobody’s cutthroat competitive though and everybody helps each other out.

Math at Duke just plain sucks.

I say it’s hard, but not doable. If you study a decent amount and don’t slack off, you should be fine.

Is it realistic to aim for, say, a 3.7+?

Depends on your major and/or how good your time management skills are. Keep in mind that, for Trinity, a 3.7+ generally means you are in the top 25% of your graduating class. Not an easy feat for some, but definitely doable.

I’d say getting Latin honors in Pratt upon graduation is pretty tough: the cut-off is really high in my opinion (compared to other universities).
