I think that's a record # of admits off the waitlist. Certainly, the highest # in recent memory. Looks like lacrosse scandal had real impact on selectivity at Duke this year.

Wonder what applications will look like for next year?

Wonder what applications will look like for next year?

well I'm one of them!

IT SAYS 175...read the article

I HOPE THIS EXTENSIVE Waitlist thing goes on with the transfer pool, bc I want to be a DUKIE.....

anyways, in the article, "Because of the smaller number, however, more students were admitted off the waiting list. The University usually expects to admit 50 applicants from the waiting list, but will admit about 175 this year."

It looks as though the overall yield will drop to between 41 and 42%, and the RD yield rate should be a little over 34%.

Keep in mind Duke was planning to go more heavily to the waitlist this year than in prior years, which have averaged 50 off the waitlist. Duke had a huge over subscription last year and couldn't afford to have that happen again. Maybe they were expecting/planning to take 100 or so off the waitlist and ended up with 175. Not so bad all things considered. It sounds like none of the slippage was in the top end of the applicant pool. Maybe they had to go for 75 more than they expected. Not that big a deal for a total class of 1600.

We all know the pool is pretty deep and the people on the waitlist are largely interchangeable with many who received offers of admission.

That's certainly putting the best face on things!

Hey - as long as the SAT Verbal average for Pratt is higher than Trinity, it's all good :-D

Wow, yields were flat or up everywhere else. The lacrosse scandal really did have a pretty big impact.

Yield last year was 43%. This year it was 42%.

BIG impact? Am I missing something?

From the article linked:

""The anticipated enrollment nonetheless remains within the normal yield of 40 to 44 percent, a range the University has maintained for the past 10 years.

"Under the circumstances, it is a confirmation of Duke's enduring reputation that our yield this year remains within that range," he said in the statement.""

Yes, from my calculations over 100 qualified students said "no" to Duke that would have enrolled in the prior year.

... percentage wise the yield changed VERY slightly... I think the people above who said they just wanted to make SURE they didnt over enroll again are right... they got more last year than they anticipated and had trouble dealing with it... better to take off the waitlist than have more than you really have spots for.

100 is a REALLY high estimate... I would consider 50 "no"s a high guess and something more like 25 more likely... but whatever... if media sensationalism made them change their mind im not sure how qualified they were.

Like Guttentag said, the lacrosse scandal had the most impact on those students who were already facing a tough choice, say, between duke and an equally strong school like stanford, dartmouth, brown, penn. Anything small like a rape scandal is more than enough to push them to the other school.

Could this mean that this year's freshman class would be academically weaker? since the people who were qualified at many prestigious schools are now gone.

SAT averages are up if that means anything

Well the article says: "Additionally, there was no significant decrease in yield among the University's top 300 applicants."

A little early to be getting reliable SAT medians, isn't it?

Not at all.

Oh? Before the stats of 175 WL admits are even known - more than 10% of the class?

And who, exactly, are these "300 top applicants" and what was the yield for this group as compared with the "usual" yield?

If it included significant overlap with admit groups at top elites, the yield rate was already low, apparently.

Erm - Byerly? Did you note the year of that article? Here's a hint: Pavan Cheruvu has already finished his tour as a Rhodes Scholar.
