Duke Early Decision Chances

I am currently a senior at a highly ranked public school in Florida. I am applying to Duke's Trinity School as an early decision applicant and was wondering what my chances of getting in are. I am ranked 32 out of the 715 students in my class and have been in the top five percent since freshmen year. I have a cumulative weighted GPA of 4.97 and a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.92. I have taken eight AP courses (passed all but one) and am taking two more as a senior. Every other class I have taken is either an AICE or honors course. I was named an AP Scholar with Distinction as a sophomore and junior. I have run cross country for all four years and earned three varsity letters. I have completed 120 hours of community service as a saltwater tank attendant/educator at a nature center. Also, I am a U.S. Soccer Federation Referee and have refereed youth games on weekends for two years. My highest composite score on the ACT is a 31, but I plan on bumping it higher on the test later this month. On the SAT Subject Tests, I got a 720 on American History, a 660 on Math Level 1, and a 630 on Chemistry. Any input is much appreciated. Thanks!

You have a chance, but not the best chances in the world … Sorry! SAT IIs are low and ACT is low for Duke. I think you should still apply, but maybe also apply to Tulane and a few other, slightly less competitive schools just in case! I hope you get in though! Good luck!

If you send your ACT scores you dont have to send your SAT II scores. FOR SURE, don’t send your chem or math 1 scores, those are very low for duke and when you have no need of putting them in, why do it if it doesnt help your app (in your case it would hurt it). If you sent the US history score it probably wouldn’t have much affect either way, but i still wouldnt send it(even though it would most likely be neutral, if it was going to have an affect it would hurt instead of help)

You have a chance, but I’d say its a reach. Your ACT and grades/rigor are good enough for Duke, but they are average(for a Duke admit), your EC’s are good enough not to hurt your app, but they won’t help it much either. A duke adcom told me they look at six mostly equal factors, with the slightly most important being grades and the slightly least being test scores:
Grades: your’s are average, won’t hurt at all, yet won’t make you stand out.
Test Scores: slightly below average, but certaintly not enough to significantly harm your app.
Rigor: Good, but again, not spectacular (especially with only having 2 senior APs)
ECs: average, if not slightly below
Recs: I would have no way of knowing
Essays: Once again I have no way of knowing

If you write outstanding essays and get amazing recs, I would say you approach a 50-50 chance; however, if they aren’t great and merely average like the rest of your app, I would guess you have 1-10% chance of being admitted.

Improve those test scores, and you’ll stand a fair chance.

I would say duke is a high reach for you. Your gpa and scores are below average for duke. I would still apply because it’s worth the shot. Definitely very hard but in my mind probably unlikely.
