My daughter is also deferred. I just looked up some numbers in the past, it seemed that Duke deferred roughly the same # as accepts, and out of which ~50 will eventually get in. So still a long shot, letā€™s wait for UChicago tomorrow.

My D was deferred ED by Duke and got in RD. Although the deferral letter is quite honest about applying other places because it is difficult to get in RD, the fact is there is a 10% better chance of being admitted RD if you are deferred ED than a regular RD applicant has. My D wrote a LOCI that confirmed that Duke was still her first choice school, updated her admission officer on her grades and accomplishments and included an additional letter of recommendation. She was admitted RD (although she decided to attend another University instead of Duke).

Mine is denied as well. Heā€™s taking it positively - we believe God has better plans for him. Congrats to everyone that got in! Itā€™s no ordinary feat!

Me too, thank you

My son called his AO the day after and received her voice mail leaving a detailed message along with saying he was sending her an LOCI. He detailed it with updates after he had submitted his application along with emphasizing how he visited and how he will attend as this was still his first choice. His school guidance counselor also had a call with his AO (donā€™t know the details). He sent emails about every month continuing to update with any new achievements etc that has changed. I believe last year there was about 800 deferred kids and about 80 were accepted. Deferred are reviewed separately from regular admissions. Itā€™s funny as most of his friends at Duke were also deferredā€¦all did the same thing. Emphasize why you want to go and this is still your top choiceā€¦

My kid was denied. Iā€™m not bothering posting stats but he was within their range on everything.

Mine deferred! Valedictorian, 36 ACT, 3 varsity sports. Ugh!

Amen, Amen. Same here. The Lord has something better in store for him! Godā€™s plan, not ours!

Congratulations!

Deferred. Some stats in previous post. Lots of great applicants. Now await EA in a month or so at others.

No disappointment, went in with no expectations and no hooks or dream school. GL

Son was deferred with 1540 SAT, Strong ECā€™s 4.5 weighted from a tough private school, heavy AP IB course load, strong essaysā€¦. To a degree Itā€™s just random. God is in control and has a plan. We just donā€™t know it yet! Still hoping for Duke but will apply to all the major Ivy League schools as well but with a 21% ED admit rate this year he is naturally very disappointed.

S22 rejected as well.

Sorry for those that did not get in. GL with the rest of the process. No doubt youā€™ll have some great options to choose from.

My S accepted ED graduated from Duke in 2020. My D also applied ED in 2020 was deferred. She was pretty devastated. Pulled it together and in 2 weeks applied RD to Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, Notre Dame, Davidson. She was denied RD Harvard, Cornell. Waitlisted Notre Dame. Admitted Princeton, Davidson, and Duke (emailed LOCI with additional Letter of recommendation). She is a sophomore at Princeton. You just never know how things will work out. Good luck over the next two weeks. Itā€™s rough, but you can do it
