Duke University offers Early Decision but does not offer Early Action for freshman admissions.
This year, the Early Decision (ED) deadline for Duke is November 15.
All ED1 applications should receive an admissions decision by December 15. Last year, Duke admitted 852 of the 3,451 applicants who applied early decision. The acceptance rate was 24.69%.

Error in the data above: the admit rate for ED was a low 16%:
“Duke received 5,036 early decision applicantions – a 16 percent increase over last year and the most early decision applicants in the university’s history. The 840 new students represent a 16.7 percent admit rate, compared to 20.7 percent last year and 18.2 percent in 2018, Guttentag said.” -Duke Chronicle Dec 2020.
For whatever is worth, if you selected “would like an interview” the interview e-mails started going out. Daugter just received hers. Of course this is based on availability of alumni to do interviews, but suspect they will have enough to go around for the ED round.
Hello. Does anyone know how does the HS guidance counselor submit the 1st MP report card to the admissions office? Is it via email or some way on Common App? Thank you!
When do you guys think decisions will come out? Last year they came out on the 18th but the year before it was the 12th so I don’t know what to expect.
I’m not positive but pretty sure they process RD applications after ED and also do the interviews later, I applied ED in october and got my interview email in early november.
Dont think everyone gets the interview notification. DS is doing ED and hasn’t received anything yet. Based on previous years’ posts, interview is based on availability in your region and students have gained admission without the interview.
“A record number of first-year/freshman applications to the Pittsburgh campus have been submitted—so far nearly double the number compared to this time last year! The surge of applications means that you can expect the initial review process to take approximately 6 to 8 weeks.”
But that’s for EA? I always wonder with Covid if people who live far and didn’t want to fly, are applying in fewer numbers (just doing RD) versus those who live closer to the ED school.
You only have to look at last year’s numbers. At schools like Duke I expect ED numbers to be up regardless… and suspect the pool will be more competitive than ever. ED used to be the tool to “improve your chances” . I believe it is morphing into the most qualified trying to be “done” with the process as top tier school applications have gone crazy together with the admit rates…Most of these schools not long ago had 10-15 % admit rates…
My son applied ED and he completed his interview about 10 days ago. Another student from his school also got his interview too. All interviews for ED applicants were to be completed by the Nov. 22nd or 23rd according to my son’s interviewer.
