Duke ED and 1st Quarter senior grades HELP!

I applied to duke ED, and I feel that I'm a pretty competitive applicant. However, there is one problem: I got a C on my first quarter senior report card. There are special circumstances though; the C was in my Quantum Physics and Electrodynamics class, a class obviously seldom taught in high school and the most difficult course in my school. How bad will this look?

I don’t even think they see your first quarter grades because if you apply ED, your transcript should have already been sent. If you were applying RD or if they defer you, then yes they will see it, but they can only see the classes you are taking not the grades. It’s too late for that.

They do see first quarter grades, it says so on the website.

How much will this hurt my chances? Duke is my top choice and this is making me so nervous:(

Anyone? please?

Oh; I see. That’s interesting that they ask for it. Well, it depends…if you’ve been a consistently strong student and you have one or maybe two C’s I don’t think it’ll hurt you that badly. If they seriously hate that C, they can always defer you to regular and see how much you’ve brought up that C and accept you later. I personally don’t think it’s a MAJOR problem, though.

I had a similar issue. My school does not issue quarter grades, only progress reports. Unfortunately for me, in one of my classes we only had one assignment and I got a b on it. Therefore I had my first b on that quarter grade report, even though it isn’t the best representation of my performance in the class. I can’t imagine having one abnormal grade at the quarter will have a major impact on your admission decision.

For reference, I have never gotten a C, or even reasonably close to it before. Usually I get all A’s, and have gotten 3 B’s up through Junior year (all in difficult classes). Thank you all for your responses! It helps a lot!

Additionally, I am thinking of sending in a letter explaining things. In addition to the fact that (obviously) Quantum Mechanics is an extremely difficult class, is taught out of a senior level college textbook, and people seldom get above a C in it anyway, my situation was made worse by the fact that I am still doing my 30 hour a week summer internship remotely from U-Chicago in addition to the fact that my grandfather was (erroneously, as I now know) diagnosed with cancer last month. Is this a good idea? Or will it look like I’m making excuses?

That might be something you could bring up in your interview
