Is Duke engineering a separate admissions process than the CAS? Is Duke Engineering harder to get into than the CAS? I am undecided on whether I want to major in Chem E or Chemistry, so I just want to apply on the one that I have the greatest chance of getting in. I have a 1580/800 (math 2)/800(Bio M), rank 2/1497, and ISEF awards in the category of Energy: Chemical and Chemistry. NO physics subject test. Basically, I have research and intel awards in both engineering and chemistry
Which should I apply to based on my profile? What are the acceptance rates of each college.
the acceptance rate for Pratt is higher: ed for Pratt is 24% while arts and sciences is 20%. normal it is also a higher acceptance rate and less people apply so less competition. if you want engineering, your best bet is to gun for Pratt
@sanjanagupta1 Im taking Ap Physics 1 rn, so I wont be able to submit a physics subject test, only math 2 and bio. Will this hurt me if I apply to pratt.
@yaleivyleague yes probably since they emphasize physics for engineering. I think that would look a little “Sus” so maybe it would be best not to submit your scores at all
@yaleivyleague wait sorry I misread. I think it would be fine cause Pratt is more wholistic and doesn’t just focus on physics itself. plus bio and math 2 are very related to engineering. sorry but for some reason I was thinking you said lit and government lol.
Just so you are aware, Duke does not have a Chemical Engineering degree. My daughter is a current Pratt student and that was her intended major, and she had to think long and hard about turning down her dream of Chem E and MIT, but she loved Duke so much she decided to to go with BioMed and a second major in Chemistry instead.
How is your daughter liking Duke BioMed?
@pittsburghscribe So far, she is enjoying the engineering program. She is currently taking the two required first year engineering classes and has no issues with either one. She will be taking a bio class next semester, in addition to her organic chem class.
@hopewhite25 Do you know if she submitted an SAT physics subject test?
@yaleivyleague She took the ACT so she did not have to submit subject tests, but since she had taken some for a couple of other schools she did submit some, but they were for Chemistry and Math. She did not take a physics class at all until her senior year.
Ok, thanks! I took the SAT, so I will submit my subject tests of math 2 and bio to Pratt. I also did not take a physics class until now (my senior year) so I can’t submit physics subject test.
In terms of admissions, Duke Admissions’ rating scales for applicants are different for Pratt and Trinity. Pratt places a higher weight on GPA and standardized test scores when they rate applicants, and Trinity places less weight on those compared to Pratt. Given your scores and ISEF awards, I would say that you would have an edge by applying to Pratt. Also, once you get in to Duke, it is very easy to transfer between Trinity and Pratt.
@doublepenguin Ok, thanks! I’ll apply to Pratt.
@doublepenguin Also, do you know if Duke tracks demonstrated interest or not? Thanks
I would take a look here from Duke Admissions: https://admissions.duke.edu/setting/plantrip
“‘Demonstrated interest,’ the amount of contact between an individual and our admissions office, is not a factor in our admissions process.”
However, my personal input is that even though most of the Admissions Offices from many top universities/colleges claim they do not factor demonstrated interest, it certainly cannot hurt if you keep in contact with an Admissions officer by sending an email after like, for example, an information session.
@hopewhite25 What year is your daughter? My daughter is a junior, and is a double major in BME and Electrical and Computer Engineering.
@Doublekk2 She is a freshman.
Thank you! All the best to your daughter. I hope she is enjoying Duke as much as my daughter has!
