Can someone please explain the various ID numbers we have? I've gotten my NetID, Unique ID, and Student ID number, but I have no idea what they're for. Also, what is the point of the alias email address?

Look here for an explanation:
[Duke University | Trinity College of Arts & Sciences : Academic requirements](http://trinity.duke.edu/academic-requirements?p=identification-numbers)

An alias is just for convenience. Rather than telling people your email is JD48@duke.edu, you can just tell them John.Doe@duke.edu, which may be simpler since it has your first and last name.

Your NetID is your login for a majority of Duke’s computer systems (ACES, blackboard, DukePass, etc). Basically almost anything that requires you to authenticate yourself to the Duke network.

Your UniqueID is just that, a number that is used (primarily by RLHS and the registrar) to uniquely identify you as a student.

Your student ID is mostly useless.

Your email alias is basically an easier way to remember your email because it’s your name instead of your initials and a random number. It’s also a way for you to customize your email to something else you’d prefer.

Ok, that makes so much more sense now. Thanks so much dd1993 and SBR!!

haha i still dont know why we have so many…i have to look on my card still whenever i need one.
