Is the Duke interview recommended for most applicants? I know that not everyone will get interviews based on location, but if there’s a chance that there are alumini by me and I would be able to get one should I ask for one? I was also just wondering if it would put me at a disadvantage if I said no to the interview on the application?
Yes, if offered, you should accept. Why would you possibly say “no” to the chance to learn more about Duke and give Duke an opportunity to learn more about the “real you”? It’s really not an inquisition – it’s a casual conversation that is supposed to be enjoyable and educational. Just be prepared to talk about your passions and what you’d contribute to the Duke community. It will look bad if you reject an alumnus reaching out. I don’t think you need to “ask for one” – Duke does its best to interview as many applicants as possible. Good luck.
I answered this in response to your prior thread. You do actually have to request an interview if you want one. You will not be penalized for not requesting an interview. If you don’t check the box you can provide an extra letter of reccomendation.
A last variant is you ask for the interview, they don’t have anyone to conduct it then you are allowed to submit the additional rec letter at a later date. My son went with this third option, was nominated as a Robertson semi finalist, given an early acceptance letter and was accepted into the FOCUS program. Clearly, the lack of an interview didn’t adversely effect his application.
Please refer to prior thread where I offered some other recent suggestions if interested.
