I received an email today that a change was made to the FAFSA. It was a bit disconcerting as no one requested a change, so I called the FAFSA helpline. Turns out Duke was the one that made the change. Does this mean that my D was accepted? I can’t think of any reason they’d be pouring over the FAFSA for a student who is going to get rejected, although I guess they could wait list. Anyone ever experience this?
Not sure, but the office of financial aid is completely separate from the office of admissions, so I don’t think it necessarily means an acceptance. They go through things on different schedules possibly.
Then I’ll tell D not to get her hopes up. (Although she never really had her hopes up as the NPC for Duke put it way out of reach.) It seems like a lot of time is wasted if they go over everyone’s FA application, but only have to prepare offers for less than 20% of them.
This likely means that your D will be accepted. Especially at this late hour, the financial aid office is only going to be building aid packages for students that admissions will be accepting. It just doesn’t make sense that they’d be adjusting FAFSA info for students they are going to deny.
I doubt it means anything but UVa asked for me to clarify something with financial aid and I got accepted there so maybe there is a correlation.
For anyone who looks at this in the future - she got in!
Great news! Is the financial aid package what you expected?
It was very close to NPC, and not enough to make it affordable. The biggest issue is that they include loans and work study as part of the package. We knew this going in, but she still really, really, really liked Duke and I knew that until she saw the numbers on the FA offer, the reality of just how much more she’d have to spend to go there wasn’t going to be real.
