Duke or Cornell?

I can't decide between the two.

Which univeristy is more prestigious?

Which is better at econ major ?

But now i'm leaning toward Duke. Some people tell me Duke is better. Others tell me to go to Cornell. I really can't decide.

Last year I got into Cornell but didn't really consider it--when I visited in March I became really depressed and wanted to rescind my application. Though I realize it's right for some people, it just wasn't right for me. Econ is a great major at Duke, both are equally prestigious, with probably Duke more prestigious in America and Cornell more prestigious abroad because it's older. Duke is harder to get into and has a more qualified student body. Duke wins in cross-admit battles with Cornell 65% of the time. However, I wouldn't choose one over the other because of prestige because there really isn't any difference. Choose the school at which you'd be happiest--and that answer is clear--DUKE!! Also, if you're from Thailand, definitely take weather into consideration. You don't know how much it affects you until you are freezing your butt off and wanting to die!

I just spent part of my spring break visiting one of my best friends up at Cornell. In terms of weather, there is no comparison. It snows for months there.....and god, is it cold. That being said, it's also VERY large (13,000 undergrad) compared to Duke (6,500 undergrad). I enjoy the smaller size here, personally. Duke's prestige has been recently acquired....the Duke of today is not the duke of 10 years ago. For that reason, certain people may consdier Cornell more "prestigious." Econ is the most popular major here at Duke and you'd definitely get a great education regardless of your major. Both campuses are really pretty, but I'm personally a fan of Duke's gorgeous gothic architecture. Also, Duke guarantees on campus housing for 3 years - with Cornell's size, they try to get people off as soon as possible.

I got into Duke but the problem is, my mom has been bugging me about how I didn't apply to Cornell and how my friend got into cornell. You see, my mom is asian and asian mom's talk. The asian moms i know think that ivies are the only school... which i believe is definitely not true. So, i've been trying to convince my mom that Duke is equally if not even better... but my convincing hasn't helped so far... i was just soo happy about getting into duke but now i'm starting to get a bit sad.. just can't help it

haha lousy asian moms... i hate it when my mom is always comparing me w/ my other asian friends at church and school.

Cornell does definitely have more "Asian mom" and "Asian" prestige considering the President of Taiwan went there, and it has a great Engineering program. That said, I hope you don't make that a large part of your decision (unless you want to live in Asia), and Duke isn't that shabby either.

Duke's way better than Cornell in social sciences, definetely tell your Asian mom that.

"Duke is harder to get into and has a more qualified student body. Duke wins in cross-admit battles with Cornell 65% of the time"

just curious. where does that piece of stat come from?

Asian moms are why the college rat race is becoming more and more ridiculous. It's a sort of collective self-delusion. Asian parent ivy league obsession will hopefully disappear in the next generation. The main differences between any of the top schools is prestige and academic/social environment. So it depends what you want: if all you care about is the latter then it is more important that the school is a good match (for you). In terms of educational quality there probably isn't that much of a difference from one to the next anyway.

Yes I'm asian

Speaking of prestige, even if your parents are familiar with the job market and hiring trends today, career opportunities differ a lot from one decade to the next. Besides, the more important thing is grad school. Even though some would say Duke is more respected than Cornell, prestige factor doesn't bother grad school admissions as much as it does asian parents.

The other thing about Asian moms is that the majority of them don't know that Stanford isn't an Ivy, and have never heard of Dartmouth.

so trust yourself

Haha-my Asian mom on hearing about both Cornell and Duke-advised me to go to Duke

(She doesnt like Cornell)

hey Cornell used to be myfirst choice but then i visited Duke for the BSAI weekend and I feel in love.

My problem is that I want to do pre-vet (i kno it's not a real major) and Cornell has a really good pre-vet advising program becuase they have the #1 vet school in the country and I don't really know if duke even has pre-vet advising. But at Duke every1 seems so much more laid back and the learning environment seems cooperative whilst some say Cornell is cut-throat. But Cornell has more courses and more majors... if I went there I would major in Animal Science with a minor in Nutrition... they don't have these majors at Duke so if I went ther I would do envronmental science which is also something I love. Help! I don't know which to pick.

prncssnyansema, have you visited both schools?? (just wondering since you said duke's much more laid back and cornell's cut throat)

oOo, interesting enough, my parental units (and i am an asian) think Duke's better than Cornell. and I am actually trying to tell them they are about equal.. lol :P (but i dont really "try" that hard since i know i wont be affected by how my parental unites think.)

Blah, Asians:)
I live in Korea and UCLA is much much much more well-known than Princeton!!
Cornell is an Ivy school and most Asians think that all the Ivies rule over other schools so they think Cornell's better :)
I think it really depends on what you're going to do afterwards and which school fits you the most. If you're going to go back to your homeland and apply for a job there, Cornell might be better. Keep on doing research and try visiting the two schools:)

I would go to Duke! And prestige wise, I always thought Duke was a as good and probably better. Its harder to get into also.

yea I've visited both... but I'm revisitingthem again in the next few weeks so hopefully that will help

my parents had the impression that Ivies were better too - my dad always bugged me about it, and at first didn't think Duke was that good of a school.

now they know ;) (after half a year of convincing)
