DUKE or UNC-CH?

I'm an instater and i'd have to pay about 10,000 or so a year to go to UNC with an honors program while paying about 35,000 or so to go to Duke. Is Duke worth the extra $25,000 a year, and lack of AC? What are the points in favor of/against duke and those for/against unc?

Lack of AC = NOT a factor. At all. You’d seriously not go to a school because you might not get AC for 4 weeks (because after September’s over, I in my non-AC dorm never wished I had it)???

What are you majoring in? This is huge. If you want to do something sciencey/engineering, Duke > UNC any day. If it’s something more humanities/social science, then UNC is really good.

What kind of college are you looking for? Do you want more out-of-staters? Do you mind going to a gigantic school or would you rather a smaller, private school?

Your opinions matter a lot in this - you need to provide us with info on what it is you’re looking for!

Well, it depends. Are you willing to camp out for 2 months to see your basketball team lose to your arch-rival? If so, then you are perfect for Duke. :p

Seriously though, I’m with Noodles. You gotta tell us what exactly you are looking for.

I was in your shoes a few years back. Duke vs. Chapel Hill, with Chapel Hill offering a $7500 scholarship, $1000 for National Merit, and Honors Program versus zero financial aid at Duke.

It was a very close call between the two, but I picked Duke. For me, it was because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after graduation, and a small desire to get away from the high school crowd; I was an instater as well and most of my friends ended up at Chapel Hill. The way I figured, if I wanted to end up in a field like investment banking, it would do me very good to have a degree from a top 10 university (and yes, it does make a major difference).

I have never regretted my decisions since (except during those occasional pre-final exam all nighters when I wondered if UNC would have been easier). If I could choose again; I’d definitely choose Duke. The professors are phenomenal, the amount of opportunities available astounding.

It is hard work, no doubt, but I personally think its worth it.

I’d say Duke ;).

Since the $ difference is quite significant, I would go with UNC.
