Hi! I want to apply early decision to Duke, but I was wondering it would be a good idea to schedule an overnight visit before doing so. If anyone has been on an overnight visit, what was it like? Any thoughts or advice? Thank you!

Are you applying ED because you have made up your mind that Duke is clearly your first choice (and have already visited campus), or simply to try to get a slight advantage in admissions?

If you already are familiar with campus and its culture, then you might want to wait until Blue Devil Days (accepted students weekend) in the spring. There will be a lot more going on around campus geared specifically for you.

If you haven’t decided if Duke is actually for you, it would probably be a good idea to visit before submitting your ED application. There are many strings attached to ED that can complicate your application strategy if used at a school that might not be your first choice.

bumppppppp

did you get info back from the overnight office?

after you emailed them the forms

I decided to not go through with the overnight because I did not have time to go before the early decision deadline.

I know you’ve already decided not to pursue an overnight stay but this may be helpful for other applicants. Since my stay here at Duke, I’ve hosted two students on different occasions; one a student from my high school who I knew only through common background and the other one who a friend of mine was contacted by via the Duke blog.

So my advice is this: either reach out to someone you know or who have heard attends Duke that you think wouldn’t mind helping you out, contact the OUA directly OR contact a student from the undergraduate blogging website, all of whom are freshman who volunteer to work with the OUA for these sorts of things.

After attending the Discover Duke in Seattle on 10/13/13, my S (16) a HS Jr has decided Duke is his #1 choice for pre med (pediatrics), previously held by Harvard. We both walked away feeling that everything they offered was exactly what he is looking for. Challenging courses in science and medical research program opportunities, but also the equally represented social aspect. I know my son is extremely smart/gifted, but I want an equal balance for him in both High School and College. That said, we live in a small ag community in Washington state and my plan is to either take Spring Break or this summer to visit Duke. I am also interested in any summer programs for high school students at Duke.

catamount17 - Would you recommend a particular time to come for a campus visit and if overnights are allowed for high school juniors? Thank you for your time and advice!

P.S. the only posters in his room, are of Duke…and 1 of Albert Einstein…of course! :)

Visits coordinated by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions are only offered for rising seniors, so that could happen next year. If you do end up visiting over spring break, though, and if we are still in school, you can contact me and I can (most likely) coerce a male friend to host for a night and I can play tour guide to a limited extent. (Or catamount17 could coordinate something, mayhaps.)

I would recommend that students come a good two weeks before Fall/Spring Break, the week after Fall/Spring Break, and not after Thanksgiving. The reason is that those are prime mid-term times, and your host will much more likely be stressed/have less time to spend with you.

Be warned that summer programs at Duke are a fair chunk of change, though I know limited FA is available. Good luck to him! (:
