@Dukedoc99… thank you so much… that helped.

Thanks DukeDoc, those photos helped a lot! If the kids want to elevate their bed high enough to fit the desk under it, how do they do that? Can you buy the risers from Duke or is there someplace special to get those? Or do they just have to take what they get?

GreekMana, Duke recommends that you look at the room first. If you decide you want to loft your bed, then you put in a work order, and they will do it for you. I believe the newer furniture allows you to adjust the bed to the heights seen in many of the pictures. (Just high enough to accommodate the dressers and/or bookcase to fit under a bed.)

GreekMana - for first-year students, you actually cannot place an order for a loft until you arrive. Here’s the scoop: [Lofts | Duke Student Affairs](<a href=“Duke Student Affairs”>Duke Student Affairs)

The good news? Getting lofts is free!

I hope some veteran parent can help me with this… After paying for the tuition and housing/dining etc… how much of flex points would be needed on an average per semester or year?
Also usually besides the dukecard what do students usually keep for their usage? Credit cards or debit cards?
And what would be an approx figure that students would spend on entertainment/ outside shops like whole foods/ etc that one needs to budget for?

My S did not need any extra flex points, but he used his meals and points wisely. Every kid is different. I know he would skip breakfast a lot and eat his lunch at the market place which is said was the best deal for the buck. He didn’t indulge in smoothies in the middle of the day as some students did. My S has a debit card from Wells Fargo which is one of the banks on campus. I know that whenever he makes a purchase, even a small one he just uses that card. As far as how much he spent on other things, I can’t tell you - he went to school with some scholarship money, a few thousand and he never asked me for a dime. I do know that he participated in some lab trials to earn extra $ for late night snacks and he never went to whole foods - too expensive.

In case anyone is interested in how the registration times are figured-- here you go.
[Registration Windows - Fall 2013 | Office of the University Registrar](http://registrar.duke.edu/registration/registration-windows-fall-2013-0)

Make sure you talk to your kid about credit cards. They will get offers, and many kids don’t understand that making the minimum payment each month will get them nowhere towards paying it off (I guess there are many adults who don’t really understand this). If you have a very responsible kid, a credit card in college can help them establish credit which makes getting that first real apartment easier and they won’t have to put down big deposits for utilities, etc. My daughter plans to use her new credit card like she has used her debit card and pay the balance in full each month. She’s very frugal (with her own money, haha!) and thinks it’s “stupid” to pay interest or late fees, so we’ll see how it goes.

Boo. Didn’t get into a pre-O. (Then again, I only applied for pChange and pBuild, but still, boo. My summer internship didn’t end early enough for me to do pSearch.)

On the upside, I can join my family at the beach!

My son heard that he also didn’t get into pBuild… he also applied for pWaves as first choice, but we still haven’t heard… seems odd. I’m glad you are looking on the bright side! My son is also not too disappointed because now he doesn’t have to decide if he REALLY wants to go early! :)

Same. There was some kind of email glitch, and the rest of the mails are getting sent out on Monday, but I’ve posting on and off on the fb page about not getting an email, and the PD messaged me. So. Monday.

Has anyone gotten an email about pWaves?

Still waiting…

My daughter got a “yes”. It was several days ago, maybe last Friday. She knows 2 other students that have heard, one a “yes” and one a “no”. This was the email contact listed.

Fellow parents - DD sent an email to her roommate as soon as she was able to log in and get her name. However, she still has not heard anything back.

Does anyone have any information about why a student would not be able to reply to an email? DD is imagining absurd scenarios, so any help would be appreciated.

Maybe the roommate is a counselor at a summer camp in the woods somewhere away from technology. Although annoying, there are many reasons I can think of for no response as yet. Give it some time.

My son had trouble getting his Duke email to work. My husband had to do some research and finally figured it out. I was worried that his roommate had contacted him and was waiting, like rmldad’s daughter. When we finally got the e-mail working, no email from roommate… now it’s up to DS to start the communication process…

We have still heard nothing about Pwaves. At this point, he’s pretty much decided to hold onto his summer at home for that extra week, so I guess it’s just as well. But I will try that contact email that was listed here just so I know something.

Still nothing from Pwaves here either… frustrating!

I doubt that all kids are using their Duke emails yet. My son emailed his roommate and after he didn’t hear back after about four hours, he looked him up on FB and sent a request that way. He heard back from him immediately that way!
