Duke Parents Thread

On the registration page (ACES???) in the upper right hand corner, under announcements. Check the Blue Book - I remember seeing something there about freshman writing, something about if it is assigned to you you have to take it that fall and if not you have to be prepared to take it in the spring. If your kid does not see it there now I would assume that he will be assigned to take it in the spring.
DS says that writing seminars are capped at 12, is that so?

Ah Duke is my dream school! I am applying this October (please wish me luck :slight_smile: ) and this thread is just getting me more excited. From DukeExchange to this simplest of its offerings (the swinging picnic tables outside of the cafeteria) Duke is everything I could want in a school & more!

Travel - we bought plane tickets for S’13 coming home for the last day of classes for fall break and thanksgving and going back mid-afternoonish on the day before classes start. But we also know that Southwest doesn’t charge change fees (fare differences yes, but no change fees), so we figure we may change as it gets closer.

Writing seminar - S’13 said his ACES page didn’t say he needed to take the writing seminar in teh fall, so he figures he’s supposed to take it in teh Spring. That matches up with what Kelowna said.

I also think room assignment is announced tomorrow, but have no idea when.

Oh - and good luck VHSgrad

@dadotwoboys:

Thank you very much! I will let the thread know how things go !

P.S. My dad is also “dad of two boys” :)

Swinging picnic tables ???

@Kelowna:

Yes, they are pretty intriguing actually! I have never seen them before but the are tables that seat, I wanna say 4 or 6 people, and have a shaded overhang but move on a track so the table stays flat but moves back and forth! They are all around the Duke Bookstore and Cafeteria area!

As far as plane reservations go - I have found that booking one way tickets cost no more than round trips. The syllabus for each class at the beginning of the semester states when the final for that class is. At that point your child can tell when their last exam is and you can book the plane tickets accordingly. As far as returning in January for second semester, if your child is the least bit interested in Greek life, rushing begins a few days before classes do, so they should get back early. Also, basketball season is in full swing and there could be a home game a day or two before classes start that you child might want to attend. I know I ended up paying to switch my S’s plane ticket back in January earlier than I had initially booked. But, one way tickets are the way to go!

Re: Writing 101, I got a email from the registrar (entitled Bookbagging has Begun!) or something that had one single setnence that told me I was not doing Writing 101 this semester.

Turns out my son DID see something on ACES that says he has Writing 101 first semester. I believe the 12 per section thing is a scheduling issue. The time slot you are looking for might get filled because of this limit. He didn’t get the “Bookbagging has begun” e-mail, though
wonder if its still coming? Will an email come that a roommate and housing has been assigned, or does he just have to keep checking My Duke?

According to what DS told me yesterday roommate assignments come out today. BUT does it mean that they will get the dorm and room assignment as well ?
He purchased his airline ticket yesterday , after some discussion we decided to go with a one way ticket this time since there are so many unknowns at this point of the game.

Just did some research and there is a catholic mass at Duke Chapel every Sunday at 9 pm. Planning on attending it the Sunday before orientation starts
:)

Roommate assignments can be accessed here with a NetID.

Well, my son got his assignment! Blackwell East. Those are the newer AC dorms? He has not set up his duke e-mail yet
looks like they do not support our server
purple - you are always on top of things - have you used your duke email yet? What dorm are you in?

DD has used her Duke email - she has been receiving info from the school, so I would definitely recommend that your son log in soon.

DD will be living in Alspaugh - she is excited. Does anyone know how to view floor plans? There were some posts from 2010 and 2009 with links to floor plans, but the links are now dead.

My son is in Giles
I was looking for links to videos and floor plans of the dorms if someone knows
I had come across a comprehensive video of various rooms in various dorms last year in one of the older links but can’t find them now if anyone can help.

I found a slideshow of a variety of dorm rooms in the Student Affairs section in “Neighborhoods” of East Campus. Here is the link:[Housing Communities | Duke Student Affairs](<a href=“Duke Student Affairs”>Duke Student Affairs)

amdmom, my daughter is also in Giles. If your son is a member of the Facebook group, the floor plans were posted there for Giles. :)

Single at Brown :)

Single in Giles- Addoms, for those keeping count. I’m very happy. Next stop: Pre-O jitters!

There’s also a photo set from Associate Dean LB Bergene that shows the buildings and rooms: [Duke East Campus - a set on Flickr](http://www.■■■■■■■■■■/photos/50800539@N06/sets/72157630202589210/)
which now that I look at it is the one-page version of the slideshow garetville posted above :)
