Duke Parents Thread

Congrats to Coach of the Year - David Cutcliffe of Duke University

… and good luck to the team tomorrow night in the ACC Championship game

The ACC game started OUT really well… Love CutCliffe!!

And there’s still the Chick-Fil-A Bowl!

Johnny Football’s last college game! Let’s send him out on the losing end of the game. And help prove that SEC football is hopelessly overrated.

Is the financial aid for next semester, (Spring 2013) the same as the initial Fall semester, and still based on our 2012 tax return or will there be adjustments if there are changes up or down on the 2013 return?

FA is based on the academic year. You should have been awarded aid (in ACES) based on the year, and then halved for each semester. The 2013 return will drive 2014-2015 aid.

Has anyone accessed the aces site recently? I used to be able to view everything for my dd’s account (bookbag, etc.) Now it just has a verification of data. Someone else please check and let me know what’s up with their site

Your D just needs to go through and verify her data, and ACES will go back to normal. It’s quick-- they just want to make sure that the information is all correct, she’ll reaffirm the Community Standard, and it’ll all go back to normal again.

Thank you purpleacorn – it worked!

My son who is a Malaysian is studying in Duke in Pratt School of Engineering. He forgot to tick the financial aid column when applying for early decision. Now can he apply for second semester financial aid or is there a way he apply for any loan without interest.

Is he an American citizen?

Loans that don’t collect interest are called ‘subsidized’ loans, and are a form of federal financial aid, which means that they are not available to international students.

If your son is an American citizen or a US permanent resident, like patriotsfan1 was asking, he should be able to apply for first semester aid, and need will be fully met.

If your son is an international student, then the answer is that he will probably not be eligible for aid, and you need to contact Duke and get ED revoked now.

Can someone tell me if students are allowed to stay in the dorms over spring break? I looked on the housing website and I couldn’t find an answer. It looks like all of the eating options are closed… Thanks!

studentaffairs.duke.edu/hdrl/housing-calendar

From this, it does like dorms will be open. However, all food options will be closed (like they were during Fall Break and Thanksgiving). I would frequently walk to the Subway right off East, or eat at the Whole Foods there.

@GreekMana-On 9th Street, which is a short walk from East, there are several restaurants, as well.

@GreekMana…Also, there are the off-campus restaurants that accepts the food points. Some of those offer delivery service.

Anyone read this book yet about life at Duke?

It’s an expose of college life, written by a recent Duke grad. My daughter and I both truly enjoyed it–the book is a refreshing perspective on the college experience, and shows a side of college life the admissions officers don’t want you to know about!

Thinking (already) about moving out at the end of the semester. Does anyone know of nearby storage facilities that my son and his roommate are planning to share? Easier than shlepping the same stuff back and forth each year!

^Public storage. There are three of them in Durham. I’ve used two of them that worked out just fine.

This post caught me by surprise. Still working out spring break details. It does make sense to get a small storage unit (or share one). Do we need to arrange for that now or will they be available as we get closer to the end of the semester?
