William Hwang got all A+s except for 1 A at Duke while triple majoring in biomedical engineering, electrical/computer engineering, and physics... that's not hard at all...
The other two are impressive as well.

Someone walked into my econ 1 discussion and my TA was like "did you get the Rhodes?" and he was like "my interview's this weekend." Too bad I don't know his name, or his motives for being in freshman econ...

He did get the Marshall I think? Whichever one is for Cambridge...

Awesome.

are rhodes scholars practically the top students at the school and thus can pretty much go to any grad school/do whatever they want in th efuture?

Haha - 2 of the 3 Rhodes scholars are in the orchestra here. It should be an interesting rehearsal tonight!

I mean, they will certainly be distinguished from now on... but these are the type of people that could've gone to a top grad school and done whatever they wanted without the further distinction of being a Rhodes Scholar. There are many kids at Duke that will go to a top grad school and do whatever they want in the future without even applying to be a Rhodes Scholar.

It's worthy to note that an overwhelming majority (but certainly not all) of these kids are full-tuition scholarship people (either AB or Robertson), so I think they probably are expected to do great things and are counseled well on these prestigious awards. It might take more work for other students to get info and such.

I don't think that's true; two of the three Rhodes Scholars aren't scholars this year. There are specific advisors at Duke for fellowships and such, and they're accessible to anyone that's interested; they're listed on the Rhodes Scholars' website. This goes back to the whole "conspiracy theory" about AB scholars, etc. that was raised on the board a few months ago. I know a few of these scholars, and I just think that's completely ridiculous.

I was a little concerned about the Hwang kid. Sounds like a typical jock--he was on the varsity volleyball team. Further, while the all A+'s are solid, his three majors are in overlapping math and engineering fields where high grades are handed out like candy.

On a more serious note, I think Duke's Rhodes Scholarship winners have almost always been AB Dukies in the past ten years. It's a sign of Duke's increasing strength that 2 of this year's 3 weren't offered academic scholy's (and I think the one was given Duke's only music scholarship rather than the AB Duke--I could be wrong about that).

By the way, getting the AB Duke doesn't make it easier to do well at Duke. That has something to do with the kind of person who wins the thing in the first place.

Correction: Hwang was an AB Duke and Satja won the music scholarship.
