its just a suggestion lol, i am an ED'er i dont care about all you RD non duke loving people :)

Hush yer mouth, foo. Get out of our thread, you commie. Just kidding. I think. I can't ED anywhere because of financial concerns. I'm not just going to say "oh SURE I'll sign a legal contract to go to your school should you accept me... even if you decide my 'demonstrated need' is $2." You'll notice that the ED thread has its own stats posted... but slipstream's got the cool stats going for the RDers, which you lesser folks don't. Oh how superior we RD folks are!

I hope you people realize I'm just playing around with this ego stuff, I'm not really all self-absorbed. But hell, we could take them ED peeps any day. Or at least slipstream could haha.

Ugh... I don't know what brought that about, but I think I'll go spend this weird surge of energy doing some more physics homework and studying for latin... SIGH. I'm feeling a strong case of latinitis coming on...

I agree with TenBelow; the duke RD people could most certainly take the ED'ers.

screw you cavalier, go suck a **** at uva, because that is where you are going because you are too mediocre to get in anywhere better.. :)

I...am utterly frightened at my prospects. I..will now go and drown my sorrows in chocolate.

1520/800/800/780, top 10%, Trinity.

Man. In this batch, I'm only mediocre. :(

lol prolly 75% of this message board will get in though. this list is pretty insane, not representative of the overall app. pool.

I'm out of chocolate!! Ahh!! I need to go drown my sorrows in "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead."

-L.

slipstream-
he was making a suggestion. i don't know how you could have gotten such a negative connotation from a simple forum post.

I love how thoughtful some of you are.

Bring it, RD! ED kids + oozing passion= fabulous.

All of your stats are fabulous, though. ;)

...which reminds me that I have to go read Hamlet Acts 4 & 5 for a test on Wednesday... bleh. Good play, but still! I just don't enjoy tests composed only of quotes and identifying literary devices. Ah well. Fun, crazy, messed-up play. And Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are treacherous... with friends like that...

wait... I should be studying. Seeya.

oi, but the post-modernist play is funny!

"The old man thinks he's in love with his daughter!"
"Good God!! We're out of our depth here!"

**** shakespeare, not a good play, none of his are, they are just a crock of **** that was written for audiences 600 years ago, NOT NOW!

Those are pretty amazing stats. I wish mine were like that.... Does anyone in RD have legacy?

yeah. my non-existent great-aunt.

and bsb, I beg to differ. the reason why Shakepeare's plays are classics is that they are centered around the fundamental issues that humans ask themselves, no matter the day or age. Identity, the power of language, evil, madness in all shapes and forms...it makes one happy.

I agree with tebro. If you think Shakespeare is crap, you really just don't understand it at all.

no, it is a bunch of crap. i understand it, but it is NOT SOMETHING IMPORTANT FOR EVERY HIGH SCHOOLER'S FUTURE. i know plenty of kids, myself included, that have terrible grammar. dont you think that grammar and writing skills are more important than reading shakespeare? if you dont you are insane. there are seniors at my school, planning to attend 4 year schools, that dont know how to spell the words rejection and tomorrow, ect. Shakespeare is NOT something vital to the success of a person. Literature can help a person develop, why not read modern novels? just because some worthless old man decided that shakespeare is good for high schoolers to read doesnt mean everybody has to follow.

yes i am passionate about it, i think its pathetic that reading that crap is considered important enough to have it required to graduate high school. bull ****

I'm sorry you think that. However, the tools of analysis and discernment are being wrought from the reading of the classics that are entrenched with meaning. If you cannot glean meaning and support your arguments with a text like Shakespeare, how do you propose to write a business paper, or a scientific article with the maelstrom of information in this world?

Grammar and writing skills are very important, and it is unfortunate that your school does not offer a curriculum that teaches these points. However, unlike math or science, english cannot be taught in small, discrete amounts that are separate from each other. When you study a foreign language, how many of the complicated grammar rules do you break? It's the USE that is the key to English, not the hard facts that are taught.

Sure, you can be told what a metaphor is. But if you cannot identify it or use it fittingly to clarify your points, it's all for naught.

No, Shakespeare is not vital to the development of a person. But neither is chemistry. Or grammar. Or history (honestly, dead people?!) Or anything more advanced than simple algebra.

But it gives meaning. It teaches in context. And it's something that will enrich your life if you care to sit down and dissect it. The "worthless old men" that you mention are the ones that make the rules, and "worthless old men" have been espousing the beauty of the classics for 600 years. Name three modern books that have the complexity and adherence to the basic questions of existence and meaning, or that will last as long.

I am passionate about it too. I find it neither pathetic nor excrement that it is considered important. I will also make no mention of any comparisons, literary worth-wise, to the classics and Sports Illustrated.

history/social science is more important than shakespeare.
chemistry is more important than shakespeare

the only thing shakespeare is good for is entertainment for a select few...

but hey, its just an online message board... :)

life goes on.. after this year shakespeare will never again be involved with my life directly.... and that makes me happy :) :) :) :) :)

Just an online message board? I believe it was you who was the first to get all huffy about the rest of us enjoying literary classics. You know, you can say you dislike an author and the author's works in other ways than the usual "dead white men," anti-intellectual statements. And besides, who said education was supposed to be entirely pragmatic? Just because something won't directly make you more successful in your future career doesn't mean it's something you shouldn't learn.

1440 SAT/34 ACT/ 800 Writing/ 740 US History/ 660 Math!/#1 out of 600+/ Trinity, obviously. Grrrr Math.....
