How much weight does Duke place in the writing section of the SAT? Do they take a serious look at it? Does is carry the same weight as CR or math? Or do admissions officers just glance over it making sure that it's above a certain point?

Duke has stated that it’s not nearly as important as the CR or Math sections. It isn’t completely disregarded though. It’s pretty much equivalent to how much weight is given to a particular SAT II.

I have been told that Duke considers your M score + (avg. of CR and W) out of 1600. So, it does make a difference, though I’m sure they place a little more value on the M and CR scores alone.

Bah, honestly SAT scores are NOT make or break here. There is a certain minimum you should probably get, (like 650 in each section, honestly) but after that I wouldn’t worry about it. I’d say Duke places very little weight on the SAT in general; I’d go so far as to say it’s less important than ECs. Leadership and impact >>> Test scores
