Duke TIP

I know Duke TIP is the 7th grade talent search. Does it play any significance in admission? Both of my children attended Duke TIP summer studies before. Can it count as EC? We are brainstorming possible topics to write about for Duke supplement. Any thoughts?

No. You could write about it for the ‘Why Duke’ Trinity essay, but I would not say it counts in any significant way.

lol yeah. My friend who did TIP all 4 years got waitlisted at Duke, but got in at Princeton and Wharton.

Duke TIP doesn’t help at all. I’m an alumni interviewer and doing those gifted programs do not help your chances one bit.

Alright, thanks. I kind of have the same thought!

Be careful including refernences to summer programs such as Duke’s TIP - it might work against you. I have heard many adcoms state that their expectations are higher for applicants who have access to significant resources (family wealth). They assume that these applicants have taken extensive test prep courses, used academic tutors, had opportunities for unique ECs and more.

rmldad I heard the same thing. Did you happen to read the article about the crazy parents from NY and their hiring of an admissions consultant for their kids?

That is an interesting, I have not heard going to summer studies could be negative. By the way, what article was that?

I partook in the Duke TiP program and agree, it directly makes no impact in your admission. In fact, I think writing about something you did in 7th grade to gain admission to a University is unimpressive completely.

However, I chose to write my why Duke essay on my experience because it was through that that is was familiarized with campus, Durham etc., allowing me to write a far more personal and interesting essay. To be blunt, the admissions officers know most students have no idea why a specific school is the ‘one’ and it is the little things you can do to differentiate yourself that help.

Good luck come application season!

Even Duke Tip has a program for 4-6th grade kids who are 9 years away from college entrance. If a applicant takes Duke TIP in high school, can he/she put it as a prestigious EC like a research camp ?
