Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, and Wake Forest

Hi, I'm applying regular decision to Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, and Wake Forest and I'd like to know how good my chances are based on my credentials:

GPA (Unweighted): 3.99
GPA (Weighted): 4.0237
ACT Composite: 30 (Math: 27, English: 34, Reading: 32, Science: 26, Writing: 8)
Rank: Approximately 1 or 2 out of 48
AP: Calculus AB, English Literature, English Language, Microeconomics. Keep in mind that I attend a very small High School. I took as many AP classes as my school offered and the most rigorous schedule available to me.
Extracurriculars:
- Captain of Varsity Soccer and Golf teams (Leadership position)
- Honor Society
- Substantial amount of community service hours
- Portland, OR 2-week missions trip
- Highest Honor Roll 9,10,11
- Varsity Soccer 9,10,11,12
- Varsity Golf 9,10,11,12
- Spanish Award 9
- St. Cloud State Math Competition (National)
- Lots of work experience (Golf course caddie, Soccer referee, and proprietor of a lawn-mowing business)

I feel that I wrote a very good Common App essay as well as a decent writing supplement. My letters of recommendation were also very good. Thanks!

Yes, out of state

Wake Forest - match
UNC - high match/low reach
Duke - reach

UNC is insane OOS, and like UVA and W&M, they reject plenty of people with 32 ACTs and 4.0 UW GPAs OOS every year. It’s not a throw-away application, but it’s not going to be the easiest to get into either. I think your essays and letters of rec will make the biggest difference. Not sure about the exact percentage for UNC, but about 65-70% of seats in Virginia schools go to VA residents.

Duke is just plain hard to get in to. But it’s a reach for anyone, so don’t feel bad. The only thing I see that really hurts you here is that your ACT has fallen right outside the 25th percentile of accepted students. That doesn’t mean you’re toast, but it definitely doesn’t help.

Wake Forest is a great school, and is probably your best bet. Your ACT score is closer to the high end (mid 50 is 28-31, whereas Duke is 31-34)

Your courseload is very good, but it’s important to remember that some people have all DE/AP schedules at other schools and can make it a little difficult for some students from smaller schools to get in.

Best of luck to you. I think you have a shot at all three, but your best shot is definitely at Wake. Although if you lived in NC, I’d say you’d be pretty set for UNC.
