I've googled some acceptance rates, however, Duke seems to be an enigma to me. When you simply google "Duke University Acceptance rate" you get 17%. However, in some articles they've published, they've talked about 10-12% acceptance rates, almost equivalent to Brown University. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this, and give me a proper number?

Thanks!

Acceptance rates vary from year to year. This link gives accurate information on acceptance rates for colleges in the past 3 years.

(Duke 2013: 11.58%)

In relatively recent years, this rate has improved annually, although some years have experienced greater gains than others. For 2014 (Class of ‘18), I anticipate an aggregate rate (ED and RD) approximating 10 percent, which would be a roughly 0.6 percent decrease from the last admissions’ cycle. I base this one two fundament facts: (1) Duke’s freshman class size cannot meaningfully change and (2) applications increased by roughly one percent.

With this said, the truly critical metric is yield, not admissions rate.

The admissions rate will go down a bit this year because they filled more seats in ED. The rest is probably statistical noise. The link below takes you to my analysis of this issue for 2013. The numbers will differ, but the framework is still useful. FWIW, I really don’t care if the RD yield rate stays flat at 33-34% as long as that’s coming from a group of 2700 or so really high quality kids.

Also, I will note that yield for the class of 2017 ran a little better than forecast, and I think they ended up about 30 students over the 1705 target.
