Hi, I got a likely letter from Duke and an invitation for the Duke Up Close visit in April. Now, due to prior commitments, I would most likely not be able to go. Will this hurt my chances if they take it as a lack of interest? Or maybe I'm just worrying too much? I am still really interested in Duke as a good possibility.

Not sure, but I think that the likely letters get an official validation stamp at the Duke Up Close event. Otherwise anyone could just type up a likely letter and mail it to themselves.(And yes, this is a test.)

What are the dates for Duke Up Close?

Hopefully, it's not the first week of April.

April 8-10.

@icy9ff8- What do you mean about the validation stamp being a test?

By the time Duke Up Close comes around, RD final decisions will already be out. Likely letters won't matter anymore, so I doubt you need a "validation" or that it is a "test."

Does getting this invitation mean we're not a candidate for a scholarship?

Lucky792: yes, it does mean that you are not a candidate for a scholarship. I checked with the admission office today. For those who pays 100% EFC or substantial amount of EFC, the scholarship is significant. For those who qualify for good amount of need-based, the scholarship is basically a wash.

is this an overnight thing for everyone? where u have to stay in a dorm

Not going to Duke Up Close won't change your decision, since you've already basically gotten in. It definitely couldn't hurt, though, to send a thank-you email to your regional admissions officer.

Yes, you stay with an upperclassman for two nights. Definitely go if you can. It doesn't cost you anything (they give you food, pay for your transportation, everything) and everyone had a really good time last year, whether they ended up at Duke or not. They're also handing you an excused absence from school.

Duke Up Close is for people who have gotten in to Duke already...its Duke's way of trying to make your decision easier (by picking Duke). You're already in, so I don't think it matters if you go or not...I was about to not go because I wanted to check out a similar thing at WUSTL, but changed my mind at the last minute.

Are any of you going?

I'm going. But I might not since it takes four days from my spring break :(

What's the difference between Duke Up Close and Blue Devil Days?

nothing really. up close is just for ppl w/likely letters so there are less people

well duke up close is over the course of two nights i believe. i dont think blue devil days has an official overnight host program. correct me if i'm wrong.

They give you the option of requesting a host for Blue Devil Days.

I'm hosting two students for Duke Up Close this year, so you all should definitely come! Duke Up Close is supposedly for the very top admitted students. (And so I was just a Blue Devil Days kid last year, haha)

But yeah, you're here for two nights (versus one for Blue Devil Days), and they pay for basically everything. They have a lot of events scheduled and it should be a good time. Blue Devil Days is what made me choose Duke last year, so if you're considering Duke at all, I recommend making the trip if you can.
