Hey, I'm having a difficult time deciding between the BME programs of JHU and Duke. I know they are both top-notch. What are the differences?

People at Hopkins used to call Duke Hopkins of the South
One of the Deans at JHU Med School was quoted as saying that his daughter wouldn’t live with him if he took a job at Duke.

When you are picking between number one and number two you don’t have a problem.

Go live where you feel happier socially. Baltimore and Duke both have crime issues that demand your personal vigilance right off grounds and both have wonderful campuses…Duke’s being grander and bigger, Baltimore’s being more historic and older.

Hopkins kids love their baseball, tennis and lacrosse teams, Duke has mega sports scenes in all arenas and the Chronicle always has sports articles very prominently displayed. Their basketball culture is unlike that of other schools and many people find it to be super fun. Many students at Duke are Division One athletes and you will find that even if you didn’t care about these sports before, you will root for your friends and hall mates.

Baltimore is part of the Chesapeake culture right on the water which has its real charms, and feels right in the center of many things in the USA and is a heartbeat away from a lot of great federal dollars and research opportunities on the beltway. Durham is part of the New South and constant sunny weather and long sunny days on more relaxed grounds. (my GF on the UM-B faculty sent me lots of photos of their freak snow piles this year…but in all honesty…weather is not bad in Baltimore…it is awfully muggy like DC and other cities on water though in the hot weather).

I suppose you could think a little about alum networks…Duke engineers my son graduated with all got employed easily plus many went off with Duke Engage in great projects funded by Bill Gates…some did semesters abroad in Australia or New Zealand…I don’t know why that was one of the draws for engineers.

I can hardly imagine that either school has an advantage in the job market over the other! But take a look at such matters as “places engineers go” to get some off campus experiences in your four short years there.

you should just go with your gut instincts on your personal instant love for Campus A or Campus B…congrats on your lovely choices!

I actually have visited and LOVED both campuses! I am so torn now. Can anyone tell me about the differences in terms of pre-med advising/preparation/connections and the like?

Johns Hopkins if you want to be on an ugly campus in cold weather working in a pressure cooker/competitive environment.

Duke if you want the opposite.

Duke would be my choice, frenchhorngirl is right.
You are so lucky to being admitted, how did you get in ? do you think I can get in ? This is my profile : http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/909747-can-i-get-into-nyu-yale.html
Thank you, oh, and congratulations by the way.
