I plan to major in BME (where offered), and eventually attend Med school

Here is the list in order of where I would like to go:
Vanderbilt-Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship (full tuition)
Duke
Stanford
Harvard
Johns Hopkins-BME
Caltech
UF

...For the love of God don't retake the SAT. Once you break 2250 there's no point; you'll come across as either vain or crazy.

Duke and Hopkins I'd say are matches, optimistically I'd say Hopkins is guaranteed. Standford is a slight reach. Harvard and Caltech...no one can say for sure. You definitely have a shot, though. I don't know about the other schools.

Now if it wouldn't be too much trouble, I'd like a chancing myself :)

vandy - low match
duke - low reach
harvard - high reach/crapshoot for pretty much everyone
stanford - high reach
jhu - high match/low reach
caltech - reach
uf - idk enough about this school, but i'm guessing you'll probably get in

OK… If you really want to get into Caltech, I guess you have to retake the SATs. That's unfortunate since you have pretty good SAT scores, but if you're looking for top level engineering schools, an 800 M + 800 Level II would help you a lot. You still have good chances with your current scores, but they could be better.

Your math score will hurt you a lot at JHU for BME. However, your projects related to the sciences will help you infinetly more than some score. Remember that JHU BME is number one on this planet and it is just as hard to get in there as HYP.

Anyone who says JHU BME is a match for anyone doesn't know what they are talking about.

Good chances at all the schools. Good luck.

thanks everybody, I know all of these schools are extremely hard to get into. I have 3 safety schools, including UF, but did not list them.

Ugh, I just realized that I still had Physics C in my senior courseload.. Unfortunately I switched to AP Stat, because I am friends with the teacher (she was in charge of the whole hydrogen fuel cell thing), and it was kind of a deal we made since she helped me analyze my science fair project.

Hopefully her rec will be good haha

big mistake? I did take physics honors my freshman year. At my school it is mandatory to take honors physics, bio, and chem before AP.

On a side note, do you think colleges look at highschool Newsweek rankings? Our school is newly ranked, as it used to be combined with a non-magnet REALLY bad as in F (FCAT) school. Just recently we got our own school code etc.

hmm I just dont consider MIT to be the right fit for me, but thanks. I really wish I could retire from SATs, but I am very unhappy and surprised by my math score.

Wow. Congrats! My son wants to go BME. You've just convinced me to save my money on the app fee for Hopkins. We went to an info session and really liked it, and we thought it just might be possible for him to go. But based on your chance replies, I'm guessing it's an astronomical reach. Just took SAT for first time, Oct of Junior year, and got a 2100. Lowest score was 680 math. CR was 690. Writing was 730. Fearful won't get in any BME program due to this math score.

Any comments? Scared to retake SAT because doubt will do better, and may do worse on the writing. Son usually tests terribly, but had done lots of prep work, classes for PSAT at the time, so was primed to take it and just took it for fun, no pressure.

Again, good luck with BME. Looks like a great field to go into.

Hopkins BME is NO ONE's match or low reach.... I know ppl many Hopkins BME who gave up Stanford and MIT to go to Hopkins BME. Anyone that thinks BME at Hopkins is a high reach or low reach do not know what they are talking about.. It is the #1 BME school for a reason. The caliber of students that get into Hopkins BME is just insane. Just insane..

and Montegut...
PLEASE do not decide whether or not to apply to JHU because of me! A 2100 is actually a really good base score. I guarantee with moderate prep he can raise it to 2200+ by next year, especially with superscoring. I'm not aware of your specific situation, but a 680 on SAT I math is not really a good indicator of real math skill (IMO). There is the subject test math II, and AP calc is always good, def for BME.

Thanks for your words of encouragement. We'll apply, but won't be disappointed if we don't get in.

Just reread your original post and saw you want to eventually attend med school.

Why are you going the BME route if you want to go to premed?

It seems there are easier majors out there that would fulfill your premed prereqs.

Also, have you considered Rice University? With your stats, you'd have a good shot. It's a wonderful school, great residential life, and a solid reputation. Would doubt you'd have trouble getting into any medical school from there.

Rhodes in Memphis is also a very good premed school, and Davidson, which I think is in North Carolina. Both have high percentage of med school admits.

Do you want to do BME research, with an MD degree, or do you think BME just increases your chance at getting into med school?

Good luck with your apps, and thanks again for your encouragement.
