Duke vs. Cornell pre-med?

I was planning on going to Cornell but I just got off the waitlist at Duke. Which is better for pre-med?

OP, having a world class medical center right there, as part of the greater Duke University campus is certainly a big plus for a pre-med. Cornell would require you to be more creative in finding EC venues. Other than that, they are pretty much peers.

Doesn’t Cornell have really bad grade deflation?

Duke.

I would choose Duke as well. I heard it is relatively easy to get good grades there.

Duke has the better reputation for premed.

Duke is excellent for pre-med. Cornell is very good as well, but it is not quite the powerhouse that Duke is in this regard. Go to Duke.

Cornell is great for pre med! However, I think Duke is supposed to be one of the best pre med schools in the country. I would love to urge you to go to cornell, but I don’t know whether I can advocate for cornell in this situation. I guess they are equally good. I go to Cornell so I maybe slightly biased.

Have you taken campus tours? Which school do you feel is the better fit?

Does Duke Medical School give their Duke “pre-med” undergraduates any “special” considerations over kids from other undergraduate school for admission

Some medical schools do

Didn’t Duke Medical School intentionally right-size (i.e., reduce) its class size not many years ago?! I guess you need to be among the top 20-30 students (among the pool of N Duke premeds, from a class of 1600? N is likely 400?) from Duke in order to have a decent chance to get into Duke Med.

For a record, the class size of Cornell Med School is slightly larger, but not much larger either. It is likely equally competitive to get into either med school, in dependent of their rank on National N&R’s research rank. Being in NYC is a factor here.

Go to where you may be happier, or if you can still not decide, go to the one farther from your home.

Duke has a higher acceptance rate into medical school than Cornell and Duke Med is basically incestuous with Duke undergrads. Check out the new Duke Medicine Class of 2016 Facebook thread if you don’t believe me. :P

^^@goldenboy,
I got about half way through the list and only counted 5 Duke grads. Were you confused by the new acceptees already being on the Duke network? You have to actually look at their profile to see where they went to college. (they have a student from UTSA!!)

General notes are not applicable. Everybody is different at the end. I actually know somebody who graduated from Duke with 3.7 GPA and had hardest time with Med. School accptances. Do not know exactly what she was missing, she has already graduated from our local Med. School. Name of UG will not help, go where you personally want to go and opportunties are absolutely everywhere. My kid went to state public that did not even have Med. School at all. It was plenty of opportunities, she got into everything easily, including the best job on campus that she did not even apply to, was hand picked by prof., Med. Research internship, volunteering of her choice,…plenty of other stuff, great LOR’s at the end. Opportunities exist everywhere, just keep your eyes wide open.
