Yes but how do top 50 engineering schools in the US exceed IIT in all respects when some top 50 engineering schools such as Harvard or Dartmouth barely have any engineering at all?

My guess is that the top 50 engineering schools in the USA exceed IITs in almost all respect and another 100 or so other schools are not far behind.

If you check the EECS graduate student rosters at UCB and Stanford, you will find many IIT grads from India. US students are mostly from UCB, followed by CMU, and a handful from Cornell, MIT, UIUC, UT, and the usual suspects ... not many from the other top 50 engineering schools.

I know this is not conclusive ... perhaps students from the other top 50 engineering schools are not interested in grad schools ...

It would be more reasonable to say maybe top engineering schools such as MIT, Stanford, Caltech, and UC Berkeley exceed IIT in all respects but top 50? No way.

maybe bc IIT is not research-focused and relies on U.S. institutions to attain knowledge? Have you heard any world famous scientists or professors associated with IIT? Any new discoveries that are significant?

^^That may be true, but that does not mean that basically nonexistent engineering programs such as Dartmouth's and Harvards exceed IIT in every single respect possible.

^That is why the U.S. universities are ranked near the top of all the world universities each year. I never saw, once, IIT ranked even top 20. The American education and universities just have higher standards and quality of education.

Another example is that other foriegn schools such as Seoul National University (Korea) or Keio University(Japan). Both these schools are intensely competitive to get into. Yet, their educational level, research output, and resources trail by great amount compared to top U.S. universities. In other words, they have smart students, but aren't able to afford these students same educational opportunities as the top U.S. schools. Also, there is saying that in Korea, China, and Japan, all the top schools are hard to get into, and really easy once you get in. The level of education at many foreign schools, including IIT, is many notches below top U.S schools.

what the hell is IIT?!?!?!?

If that's indeed the case, I have a hard time understanding why there are large numbers of IIT grads earning PhD's at our best engineering departments all over the country.

Their admit rate is low because India (2nd highest population in the world) as a whole applies there.

With that said, however if you're talking about IIT as in the one in India, then it is without a doubt a better choice for Engineering. Those who say otherwise are quite simply biased. I say this having great pride in being a Duke student.

same thing i thought jct. at first i thought it was something like ITT Tech and laughed but obviously its not, and much more elite. Guess i never heard of it because
1) Im not interested in engineering
2) It's in India and i presume hardly any Americans attend.

Im sure a lot of people where thinking "what?!?!!?!"

This is the most pointless topic ever. Seriously, I love Duke but why are there always Duke vs. another school topics in this forum?... sounds like a little insecurity issue on here...

lol if this is a serious thread

This thread finally got moved. More Duke vs [school] to go.

Difficulty doesn't mean quality. Everyone should feel fortunate to live in the United States. A solid school like Penn State or Purdue is leagues above IIT in terms of research.

Tsinghua [34 million HS seniors in China, 3400 spots], Peking, IIT, and other insanely low (less than 0.0001% "acceptance rate", they don't accept, you apply if you think you have the score) are inhumanly difficult to get in, but don't offer a better quality of education that most US schools.

IIT, derka derka. velcum too eendea!

IIT is ****in great

lol did the original poster mean Illinois Institute of Technology or Indian Institutes of Technology?

"IIT, derka derka. velcum too eendea!"

That is extremely racist, but I laughed..for a while..now the guilt is wearing off

indian institute of technology!....i would think so at least

I would venture to guess that a comparison between IIT (the one in India) and Pratt is relevant to maybe....0.01% of the people at Duke or thinking about applying to Duke, if that much. So...besides an ego trip, is this thread really necessary?

What the hell are you talking about? "The one in India.."? There are seven in India. Please do some research before pretending you know what you are talking about. : P
