duke vs. jhu?

what are the major differencences btwn duke and jhu for a bme minor? what about the atmospheres of the colleges in general? how about weather?

While I might be wrong, I’m pretty sure that Duke doesn’t have a BME minor at all. No idea about hopkins.

You are right SBR.
At Duke you can’t minor in BME, nor can you at JHU. You have to be accepted to their BME program during regular freshman admissions to even major in BME.
Simple to say, you can’t minor in BME at either school

oh…i meant bme major?? which schools are better…

sorry about that…

Ok to be honest, I don’t think anyone on CC can answer this question, nor can both of the university. They have different approach to their teaching, their curriculum is taught differently. Both are amazing. Almost all the successful graduates can find jobs or grad school easily. BME at both school is tough. Almost all the students that go to BME at both school are successful. There is no way of saying which one is better. Ranking BME school is totally unreliable (Rice, Duke and JHU all are some of the places to study BME/BioE). You simply can’t say that one is better because few people have truly experienced both school and no one has experienced a full undergrad study at both schools.

thanks so much…i guess i should go for college visits…

one more question

how is the intramural sports at jhu or duke?? particularly swimming?
also, if any of you know, how fast must one be to join the team? it is year round, right?

i don’t mind the time commitment, but i am not in shape right now to join the team, although i would love to in the future

i really don’t know if any of you will know how to answer this, but if you go to either school and swimm…

anyways, thanks so much for the responses…

Like all sports, it takes up a lot of time. Duke swimming isn’t a bad team. But it is year round. Go look at GoDuke.com

Wait sorry were you talking about intramural as in like you are not competing against school? Then I don’t know

well, i would like to be on the team, but as of now, i am not fit enough, so i was thinking of intramural at first then i’ll see how it goes and if i can move up…

You can try club swimming. They accept anyone who can swim and have many practices throughout the week (not all mandatory). Perfect place to get fit and back into the groove.

go on a college visit. the environments at the two schools couldn’t be any different. and plus, if you think durham is ____ (insert stereotype adjective here), wait until you see baltimore o_o

ha ha… about college visits, is it true that some colleges give a tiny bit of preference to students who have visited campus- just because they have shown more interest in it and are thus (supposedly) more likely to apply??
I want to go for some college visits, but for now, i am holding them off because they are expense (ie airplane rides and all)

SBR- nice idea about club swimming, but would that be outside of the college itself? like a separate organization? i used to be a club swimmer myself, but there weren’t any college students where I swam…

some colleges definitely do (WashU and Emory, for example), but a lot of the elite privates do not (ie Duke, JHU, Stanford, Ivies…) There is just TOO much interest for them to even care.

milkTea11: club swimming is a club sport at Duke. It’s entirely student-run and organized. They do have a coach of some sort I believe but I’m not clear on the specifics. They practice at the Wilson gym on campus and sometimes at Brodie on East.

Here’s their website: [Duke University Club Swimming](http://www.swim.imsports.duke.edu/)

“is it true that some colleges give a tiny bit of preference to students who have visited campus- just because they have shown more interest in it and are thus (supposedly) more likely to apply??”

From the Duke website:
“Duke does not take demonstrated interest into account when evaluating applications.”

[Duke University Admissions: Ask a Question](http://www.admissions.duke.edu/faq/index9ffc.html?iQuestionID=519%20&iCategoryID=1)

I don’t believe that for a second.

While it’s not an official policy, and Duke probably doesn’t track campus visits, there has to be some bias somewhere. I mean after all, Duke is trying to increase its yield. Just because the adcoms don’t give you points for showing interest doesn’t mean it’s not on their mind.

thanks sooo much sbr and cdz512, duke club swimming sounds like a really good organization…do you know if other schools (cornell, upenn, jhu, carniege mellon, caltech) have a similar type of organization???
