Do students dual major in BME and other engineering areas (in my case, I'm thinking of dualing in BME and Civil Engr.) and still do the 5-year program to get a dual B.S./M.S. degree. How hard is the courseload? Also, am I allowed to dual major in BME and a Trinity major (say, business, pre-med, or law) to be more "marketable" when I graduate and more interdisciplinary. What do you think?

BME/CEE/MS might be a stretch in 5 but doable - especially with some APs. I need to revisit the current curriculum for the BME/CEE double...

You can definitely do a double with BME and anything else, including anything in Trinity that we have (we have no undergraduate business, law, or designated "pre-med"). Along those lines, I would say a double in Econ with a certificate in Markets and Management Studies (http://www.markets.duke.edu/) would be rather ridiculously marketable.

Does the cost of tuition go up when a student double majors?

No. Tuition does not go up when you take more classes, either - although your sanity might drop considerably...

So I could do a double in BME and Econ? How hard is it? I mean, each major has ALOT of requirements (30 something credits, or whatever). And could I still get a master's in both in 5 yrs.

It's actually reasonably common. Econ has, I believe, 13 credits, three of which probably overlap with your BME major (math classes).

You would be officially a Pratt student, so you would face their (lesser) general education requirements.

And I don't think Duke has a 5 years master's program for Econ. So if you were to do that, you'd have to apply separately. I've never heard of anybody doing this.

What in your opinion is the best and most marketable dual major combination at Duke?

I am actually thinking about doing the BME/Econ comb... I already have talked with Dean Simmons (who completely planned out my four years, she's amazing). It is definitely doable, all i have to do is overload one semester with an extra econ class.... However, like I found out this registration time period, it takes a lot of planning each time to get all the classes to fit right

Who is Dean Simmons and how do I get in touch with her?

Is she an advisor? Anyone have her email?

she's one of the engineering deans, very helpful... right now we are just through advising period, so she should be available more now (although blue devil days might take some of her time) You should be able to locate both her phone number and e-mail through the pratt engineering website
