Okay, here is the deal.
I sent my application to Princeton 2 days ago. Today I was going to submit my writing supplement, when I noticed that there was an extra essay required. Essay for B.S.E. applicants. Well, the problem is that apparently I choose the B.S.E. option by mistake on my application! And I haven't even noticed that! I DON'T want to pursue a degree in B.S.E.!
Office of admissions is closed until December 30. I emailed them, of course, but it'll be too late...
The essay minimum is 300 words, and to submit the supplement I have to meet the minimum. Should I just apologize, describe the situation, and write why do I want to study what I want to study except for 'why do I want to study engineering'?

Write it and submit it. No apology is needed. Princeton is happy to process your application. They aren’t here to automatically dump your file. You may eventually be rejected – but it won’t be over the submission of this essay.

I did the same thing and emailed the admissions office too! But this was for SCEA and I had more time. They emailed me back just telling me to write an essay on why I wanted to go to Princeton! So all hope is not lost Just include a sentence at the beginning stating the confusion and then write on why Princeton is right for you and why you are right for Princeton! Hope this helped!

My daughter did a same mistake. But her major choices in coomon app were not related to engineering, anyway. She said she can write it anyway. But my concern is a mismatch between BSE and her major choices. Should she still write a B.S.E. essay? :(

Below is what my daughter received from admission office.
“Dear Student, Because you have already submitted your application, you will need to complete the engineering essay in order to submit your supplement. We understand that you may not be interested in studying engineering, so please use this as an opportunity to let us know what academic areas you are interested in studying and why you would like to study them at Princeton.”
And so she quickly wrote an essay on what academic area she is interested in and why Princeton.
It helps some of you in the last minutes.

The application suplement had a choice of AB or BSE (BS in engineering) prior to major selection as a part of main application, not in supplement. It actually confused many applicants including my daughter. She initially thought AB=B.A. and BSE=B.S. and summited the application, thinking she could complete the supplement later. When she tried to complete supplement, there was a BSE writing section which made her startled. And we realized that the BSE was for true engineering intention no matter what majors she chose. After receiving a reply from admission office, it may not be a big issue in application. Since Ivies which will not give any merit-scholarship are not her top choice, this is not a big issue, anyway. :)

Looks like the supplement works differently than from two years ago. The entire supplement with the selection of the degree and the essays had to be submitted together in the past.
