For all the incoming students worrying that the e-bill amount is zero, you should now see the 'tuition' charges for Fall semester and your first month's charge for room & board (1/10th of the total). On the e-bill you have the choice for the 'tuition' portion of either paying it all at once or paying 1/5th each month thru the semester.

Does grants/scholarships cover this cost? Or do you HAVE to pay first then the grant/scholarships reimburse the fees?

wait for grants/scholarships to go in before paying.

they should get there before the payment is due yes? Thanks.

I don’t understand how payment works, so if I could get some help, I’d appreciate it.

I have a $1000 scholarship coming to me in August/September. Can I pay everything except $1000 by Aug 15 and just pay it later? Or is EVERYTHING due on August 15 (unless I go on the multiple payments plan). Are there any extra charges if I decide to go on the multiple payments plan? Thanks.

In the financial aid award summary tab of bearfacts, is it supposed to say:
Reg Status: Not Registered ?

Not Registered is the status until you have paid your ‘tuition’ for the semester.

I obviously cannot guarantee this, but experience says they don’t start charging late fees until 30 days after the due date – that is, 9/15.

Aid from the school budget – university grants, CalGrant funds, and loans – should be disbursed prior to the start of the semester, or within a week of the first classes. Those funds will be applied against the fees currently charged to your account. Any monies in excess will be refunded to you by EFT or a check available at the office.

Aid from outside sources – scholarships from third parties and possibly some Cal funds, depending on what it’s for – needs to be applied from outside, and you should already have arranged with the school to have this amount counted into your budget (and to get the checks sent to the right places). These funds may be slower, and it might be better for you to pay any outstanding fees and wait to get the amount refunded to you later.

Does the Regent’s Scholarship count as “financial aid” and is applied in the same way?

do we pay only $5k or $11k on august15th? it seems that they charge you twice for dorms? a monthly dorm is ~1000 or ~2000?

SoCaliii: I don’t know first-hand, but it should work the same way as the rest of school aid. There are Regents scholars hanging around, so maybe one of them can confirm that?

jiggs: Didn’t do the dorming thing, but you will start your payments on the first half of the yearly dorm fees. The amount quoted in the COA is the full school year’s amount, but billing is done by the semester (or, in the case of dorms, monthly).

jiggs: ‘tuition’ and dorm/meal fees are done differently

dorm/meal fees are for the entire year, but they are always billed 1/10th of the total each month. The 10 months covers Fall and Spring.

‘Tuition’, which is a set of fees but none are named tuition since the UCs are required to provide a tuition free education to all California residents who are admitted, is billed only for the coming semester. The amount you see is one semester’s worth.

The ‘tuition’ can be either paid once for the semester or you can select the deferred payment plan for that semester, paying just over 1/5th of the ‘tuition’ total each month. The amount includes a finance fee.

When you look at your ebill, there will be two “pay this now” values to choose from. You pick the higher if you want to pay the ‘tuition’ for Fall complete in your August payment, the smaller is if you are electing the payment plan where you will pay the ‘tuition’ over five months.

If you don’t understand this odd approach, your first bill can be really, really confusing. Further, your total obligation is not the full year’s costs, it is a full years room/board plus a semester of ‘tuition’, but does not include the Spring semester ‘tuition’ which will show up in January.

Regents applies the same way. It’s much quicker than outside scholarships at being processed.

The bill is not pretty when financial aid is not being implemented lol
