E.C. Worries...

I'm a junior, and I'm worried that my extracurriculers aren't strong enough for colleges like Cornell, Penn, Duke and Chicago. Any advice/opinions?

Marching Band- 9,10,11(12)
Cross Country- 9,10,11,(12-captain)
Indoor Track- 10,11,(12)
Outdoor Track- 10(11,12)
It's Academic- 11,12- T.V. Team member
NHS- (11,12)
Math League- 9,10,11,(12)

I have a handful of awards and varsity letters, but nothing special..

Any comments?

looks a little bit sparse, but im really not much of an expert.

I devote alot of time to them, about 15 hrs a week. Any suggestions for improvement?

If the adcom knows anything, they'll know it's hard to have other time-consuming EC's with marching band. I used to take piano lessons once a week for an hour and I had to postpone them til January because I didn't have any time for it (20+ hours a week at marching band). Marching band is a really big activity, so I don't really think you're that lacking.

You are scaring me here. I have worse ECs than that, and people are saying yours are scarce...

Yeah I know... At least there's a break for now. It was really bad with Academic in the morning, cross-country from 2:30-4:00 and Band from 6:30-9ish.

i had no idea marching band took up that much time! at our school, we have an award winning marching band (im not in it) which several of my friends are in and they practice once a week. But if yours is much more time-consuming, be sure to make a note of that on your application.

also, it depends on where you are applying. if youre shooting for ivies, then maybe you need a little bit more. If youre happy with something less competeitive, this just may do the trick!

Im shooting for lower ivies like Penn and Cornell, and other competitve colleges like Duke and Chicago. No Harvard, Yale, Stanford, etc.

isn't cornell pretty competitive?

well you have less than typical Mr. CC president of every other club and won an award for best student in america. but i wouldnt worry about it. you look devoted to running and band is always a plus. if you really want to add anything, try to do a little volunteer work. i volunteer at my local library occassionally

Yeah, band is pretty hardcore. Our band was class champions this year, and we practiced 3 times a week (8.5 hours a week), along with football games (anywhere from 5 to 7 hours on Fridays), and competitions Saturdays (anywhere from 8 to 22 hours on Saturdays)

ok, ill try to fit some volunteer work in
