Anybody know when we get our USC email addresses? I want my facebook lol...

Two weeks before class commences. I know, I want mine know too.

Do we get to choose the username?

I got mine at orientation...and no you don't get to chcoose

oooo orientation? mine is in about three weeks!

you don't get to choose but in addition to the one they assign you, assuming you don't have a common full name, you're given the alternative firstname.lastname@usc.edu

For instance, if my name was Francis Fitzgerald, and they assigned me ffitzger@usc.edu, assuming no one else had this name, I could also use francis.fitzgerald@usc.edu.

I didn't know that themegastud! You learn something new everyday...

I also got mine at orientation. You don't get to choose it, but if your name is short, and not common, you will probably have something like, if your name is sara jones, sjones@usc.edu. Sometimes your name is longer or more common, so you will have one or two letters of your first name, and a few of your last (often a last name gets cut off).

i actually never knew about that multiple email thing either, so for fun i decided sending an email to "myself".......yeah......so i think some other guy just got an email from me.

hahaha... so we have to choose one or the other? No fun.

well, i'm not so sure it's a choice, least i never got one, you're generally just assigned it.

sharon li = sli@usc.edu?

lol

you get to keep the emil as long as you're usc student right? are the email addresses ever recycled? like two people named bob smith in two years will they get the same thing even if the first bob smith has already graduated?

Once you graduate you can get an @alumni.usc.edu address, and you lose your old one. So there will never be multiple email addresses at one time.

"i actually never knew about that multiple email thing either, so for fun i decided sending an email to "myself".......yeah......so i think some other guy just got an email from me."

Haha, that craked me up. If you log in to your USC email thing, and then go to options, the default page that loads -- "account summary" should say:

Email Addresses

Your account configuration enables you to receive mail addressed to any of the following:

blahblah@usc.edu
first.lastname@usc.edu... assuming you don't have a name already taken.

When you lose your address after you graduate, doesn't that mean a new student could get old emails that were meant for you? What if you were signed up for PayPal or lots of mailing lists? I suppose nobody ever uses their usc.edu address for things like that.

"i actually never knew about that multiple email thing either, so for fun i decided sending an email to "myself".......yeah......so i think some other guy just got an email from me."

hahahaha that actually happened to me too. I sent a random email to "myslf" but instead the email went to some person with the same name/last name as me. i then sent another email w/ the subject heading 'oops...sorry...' (or something like that)

How do '09 students already have Facebook accounts?

dunno. but does anyone want to create a new usc-specific networking site with me? php/mysql.

I'm pretty sure the only '09 students that are on facebook are architecture majors, which means it takes them five years to graduate and so they were already freshmen this year, and could do facebook.

I'll be '10 with an e-mail
