She should withdraw her other apps ASAP. What if she took a spot from another kid? ED decisions were over a month ago.
For those of you who have students with stellar stats who got deferred, did you have your kids show interest? Join multiple virtual events, request Spider Chats, do an alumni interview, meet with a local AO if they had virtual visits with your school? I really think this helped some kids and goes both ways. Kids who showed interest and learned more about the school and still applied show that they like it and think they fit. I believe EA acceptance rate last year was around 32% so it’s not a super easy admit. Richmond only yields about 25% of its admitted students so I’m sure they are always working on trying to increase that and admitting student who they think will enroll.
Yes - visited in person visit pre-covid, virtual events this summer as well, reached out to regional advisor just once to say hello and how excited she was. Also attended the virtual visit at her high school.

Yes, she has withdrawn all other apps as required with an ED acceptance. A couple of the EA apps did not have a withdraw feature on the portal available. She hade emailed UR and was actually surprised to get the email that her decision was coming. My point was really that decisions may surprise you! She would have predicted the opposite results.
Well, right. And your D was accepted.
Accepted D sent 34 ACT. 4.0 UW, 4.96W, 12APs, 3 season Varsity athlete, Class officer, Club Pres., state level leadership (VP and Pres), national leadership award, etc. Attended Preview Richmond as a sophomore. Did Spider Chat and other virtual presentations. Met with AO at school early junior year.
misread your post
No worries! Congrats to your D!
thx - you too!
The website says if app is not compete-it will automatically become deferred to regular (I assume understanding some kids can’t get the mid Senior grades by Dec. 1). So yes, it sounds like if you didn’t submit grades, that was the case.
Thank you! If I was deferred since I didn’t get my grades submitted, will I still bf considered for any scholarships?
Yes. Visited and toured pre Covid. Met with AO virtually when they visited the school. Updated the AO twice after her app was turned in when she won award and was selected for National Conference. Guidance counselor sent first trimester grades.
Yes. My D attended virtual visits, a spider chat and met with the AO during a virtual visit to her high school. I’m guessing it was a lack of EC other than NHS, Cheer and volunteering.
@cucumbers1234 Perhaps interest? There are plenty of ways to show interest (without visiting). I got in with a 1370 and a 3.87 weighted, but I had a virtual talk with an alumni and I emailed my AO. I hope you get in!
Daughter accepted as Presidential Scholar
Someone mentioned 2500 applicants got this Presidential Scholar, 1/3 tuition off.
I find that hard to believe since they only accepted 3700 kids all of last year. There’s no way that just from EA and ED they gave away 2500. Maybe 250 which would make more sense since they didn’t release regular decision yet. They don’t give it to more than half of their accepted kids.
Right. From their website-
The University of Richmond awards merit-based Presidential Scholarships, equivalent to one-third tuition, to students who have achieved outstanding high school records in a highly rigorous curriculum. Presidential Scholarships are awarded to only 10% of incoming students.
Also, if anyone is willing to share, I am pretty curious how they decide on who gets these. Clearly, some very high stat kids weren’t even accepted. I have a theory that they might use Presidentials to increase diversity - geographic diversity, first-generation students, maybe kids with majors that aren’t too popular. I’d love to know a little more about the kids here who got the award.
Last year, UR admitted 3727, enrolled 811.
So the 10% of incoming were 10% of 3727 or 811?
They say that they offer the scholarship to 10% of their admitted students so, for last year, it’s probably around 370. They can’t control how many of the enrolled students come with the Presidential since they don’t know who will enroll (except for the ED applicants.)
