@tennis83 the poly sci department is pretty good, depending on the classes and proffesor you have the experience will be different. Many proffesors have their PHD’s and have lots of experience on their field. Currently i am working in a group project where we have to run our own countries, create govs, health structures, productions and everything (all computer based simulations, with a given time frame that equals one turn) which is pretty cool. One thing is for sure most classes have group projects so be prepared. Btw im a poly sci business admin combined major.
Speaking of hours – is honors much more time intensive? Are the honors sections of course far more rigorous?
The honors sections depend upon the teacher in how much different it is from non-honors. Sometimes it is just smaller sections and sometimes because of that you don’t need to have a recitation class also.
Thanks @kiddie, as usual! Is the grading harder? And what percentage of a students’ classes are honors?
Very few will be honors - you need only 6 of them to graduate with honors and one of those will be your intro honors one credit class first semester. They usually offer only honors sections in introductory classes (where there will be enough students to warrant it.) Then there are freshman and upperclassmen honors classes which are sort of special topic classes not in any academic department. Some of these are very cool - spies in the cold war, etc. Many are interdisciplinary. http://www.northeastern.edu/honors/academics-3/honors-courses/honors-first-year-inquiry-series/ http://www.northeastern.edu/honors/academics-3/honors-courses/honors-seminars/
The exception to this honors stuff was the intro computer science class (fundies) where the honors kids had harder assignments and longer tests and longer finals - however that curriculum has been changed and I don’t think this is true any more.
My daughter had an intro to microeconomics honors class where they covered so much that she felt her regular advanced microeconomic class the following year didn’t teach as much! Again this varies by teacher and subject and it wasn’t harder just more in depth.
NUIn has added locations in Italy and China for fall, 2017 in addition to retaining the previous locations.
Thanks @raulhumber2!
So helpful @kiddie thanks! I am just worried about work/life balance.
Does anyone know anything about the college of arts media and design ( specifically flim and screen studies or journalism.) How much smaller is this college compared to the other ones ( for class size?) How are the professors? Is it possible to take a minor in another college?
CAMD is a pretty decently sized college given how much it houses. Film and screen studies will be much smaller while journalism will probably be closer to average. I can’t speak to professors in either personally, hopefully others can.
Absolutely. You can take classes, minors, and majors across colleges very easily. There are so few restrictions on any of that. Changing majors, even to a different college, is also a very painless process.
My younger D is a frosty arch student in CAMD And has loved all her profs and mentors so far. And small classes.
@twicemama Frosty??? Autocorrect?
I heard it was getting pretty frosty in the arch studio, but last summer’s renovations were supposed to fix that
Frosh… but she did say the new improvements have made things better in there!
Coming from CA, she has been a little frosty though too.
I know this was a while ago, but I had some questions on my 15k merit award for NHRP and I wanted to amend what is going on.
I have been completely rejected for financial aid.
My FAFSA EFC was 18k. Northeastern is refusing to give me ANY financial aid, making my EFC at NEU about 52k right now (which is obviously just 100% not going to happen). They have also turned down any increase in my merit award, so apparently it is definitely possible to not get the whole 30k.
@marijke Have you spoken to someone in admissions regarding the NHRP? FA aid via the FA office is one thing, but merit is released by admissions. You need official clarification on what will happen if you choose NEU as NHRP school and win the award. The initial merit they gave you would get replaced by the 30K NHRP scholarship. Did you ask that specifically? For example, if you had not applied for FA, you would have gotten the 30K NHRP scholarship - so I’m having a really hard time understanding how they can tell you that you won’t get it now. Assuming cost of attendance of 60K, I would think you’d get 8K for a university grant plus 22K for NHRP (EFC 52k) or just get the straight 30K NHRP award.
Can anyone speak to the newish (2014) bioengineering bachelors program at Northeastern? Trying to decide if this evolution means new funding, faculty and energy or does it mean lack of experienced faculty, limited co-op options/job placement etc. The new science and engineering building looks dazzling…
Do TAs get paid?
TAs do get paid - I think it is a stipend - it is a job and you need to be responsible - show up for help hours etc.
@PengsPhils is a TA I believe.
