EA/ED 2016 - Ask a Northeastern Student

TA’s get paid, but it depends on the department. For CS, you make $14 an hour for 12 hours as week as a TA, and $12 an hour for 10 hours as a tutor. I’m not sure if others do stipend, etc.

@RelocatedYankee
I think it’s a bit of both.

Obviously, with a new department, they will be hiring more faculty and growing it over the course of the next few years. I wouldn’t assume inexperienced faculty, as they are probably hiring faculty with prior experience to set a base for the department.

As far as co-op goes, I don’t think that will be limited at all - they likely already existed and were previously taken by other engineering and bio students. Boston being a huge medical hub is helpful there.

A good way to check is to see where the current department professors have been before, where the directors were, etc.

@RelocatedYankee - It’s worth noting that even though the bioengineering bachelor’s is new, the bioengineering department has been around for awhile offering masters degrees and PhDs. So they’ve had time to establish the faculty and department before launching the undergraduate major. Since there’s a large overlap between bioengineering and other existing degrees in engineering and biological science, this also means that there’s already a large pool of co-ops out there that bioengineering students are qualified for.

I know this is for EA/ED accepted students, but I was deferred and NEU is my top school, hence the username. What is the acceptance rate of deferred students in RD? Doesn’t have to be exact, but just an idea.

Also, how good is NEU about financial aid? I need about 40K to go with a EFC of about 15K. I started a feed about the net price calculator and someone answered, but I’d like to get more opinions.

@neutopschool

There aren’t any available numbers on deferred students, and I really don’t have anything to even make a reasonable ballpark on.

Financial aid varies, but in general, it’s not good. Not nearly as bad as NYU per say, not nearly as good as an Ivy with a huge endowment. They are going to scour the CSS profile, and will add to your EFC from there. In basic cases where there isn’t huge home equity, separated parents, money in stocks / complex tax savings accounts, the EFC usually is a decent guide point. Unfortunately, a lot of middle-income kids are in that middle zone and get unrealistic EFC’s, which does suck :confused:

In the end, I think all you can do is wait - don’t worry about all this too much and see what you get. It’s certainly all possible, but no one can say when it comes to these decisions. Good luck!

Hi everybody and @TomSrOfBoston in particular. Update about National Merit, since there’d been some uncertainty about NEU’s NM award protocol this year. My son chose NEU as college choice by March 1. The NMSC sent out the roster to designated college sponsors that day. As of today my son’s FA sheet reflects the 30k. This replaces what was originally offered in grant aid. So it seems they are staying the course, which is wonderful. I hope this allays any worry prompted by the one outlier from earlier in the year. We are hugely relieved and getting excited.

Hello, I was deferred in December, and I was actually excited bc I honestly thought I’d be rejected! lol I initially felt accomplished to have made it pass the first round :wink: but now I’m just nervous and anxious
So anyways, I’m wondering…Why was I deferred? I’m not wondering this bc my stats were beyond good for NU, but actually bc I feel that my stats barely brushed bottom of NU’s expectations. Attached is some of my info. I would love some insight!

NU is my #1 school rn, and this wait is killing me slowly.

Has anyone else received the NMF scholarship? I am not seeing it yet.

@heidoscop see post #145

Any must sees on campus? Daughter is going back for for the honors revisit day on March 19th and we’d like her to see it in the best possible light. (That honors scholarship is so very attractive…) Hope they will see International Village and the new science & engineering building. Any other suggestions?

@RelocatedYankee I think the honors dorm is East Village this year, not IV.

@RelocatedYankee will you post any crucial info here ipon your return? My son will be in DC for an internship so we cannot attend, which is frustrating.

@RelocatedYankee The honors dorms will be in East Village this coming year, IV will become an upper classman building. The engineering building as of now is not part of the tour, but if you fill out those surveys after the tour maybe we can add it on for future students. As far as what to see outside the tour really depends on the student and what you want to know more about the school. If you have any questions feel free to message.

@RelocatedYankee The event should cover everything on campus and all. I’d say just spend time in Boston off campus in addition to on campus - check out Newbury Street, Copley, Prudential Center, etc. Walking over that way past the reflecting pool from Huntington is a good way to get a feel of just how nice the location is!

Just found this on the honors website - something different this year -guess they are sorting different honors interests onto different floors of East Village

Where are Honors students placed for housing during their first year?

First-year Honors students live in the Honors Living Learning Community in East Village. Upper-class students may choose to live in honors housing in East Village upperclass housing or in West Village C.

What is a Living Learning Community?

A Living Learning Community or LLC is a community in a residence hall where students share a common theme or academic interest. All first-year Honors students are housed under the Honors Program LLC “umbrella” and will join a community of entering scholars with a wide range of interests and concerns on each of our floors in East Village.

Starting in Fall 2017 all first year Honors students will have choice of an LLC theme they may join. During the spring semester, prospective students will be asked about themes they may be interested in being involved with. More information on choosing your theme will be shared after May 1.

Yes @kiddie honors will announce the themes in May, apparently.

Even if they don’t show the new Science and Engineering complex on your (which I’m pretty sure we don’t), the lobby is open to the public and I encourage you guys to go in and look around if they don’t show you! Some very cool architecture.

Well thank goodness we are revisiting. That info session and tour seems so long ago and I thought East Village and East Tower in Int’l Village were one and the same.
@binky17 We will be sure to post an update

Do any other National Merit Scholarship Finalist ED accepted students not see an update on their Portal (as noted in #145) for the NMF scholarship? We do not yet see an update and wonder what is up.

Does anyone know if there is a college gpa minimum for Northeastern’s National Merit Scholarship? I know that other NEU merit scholarships require maintaining a 3.0, but I am interested in the NM scholly specifically.
Just a couple of months ago I was worried about high school gpa; now I am already worried about next year! Good grief!
