Is it common to apply EA and ED both?
Is there any disadvantage?

No disadvantage as long as you know that if you are accepted at your ED college, you must withdraw all your other applications.

If you apply ED to one school, you normally can't apply EA or ED anywhere else.

It depends on the school. Some ED schools allow you to apply to other schools under EA (Wellesley lets you, while Brown doesn't)
So I guess it would be easier to just call and ask the school cause they really dont post this stuff on the school website.

Also, if you do ED, some schools will not allow you to do EA, such as Georgetown and BC.

Keep in mind that none of them can really find out. They can just shake a stern finger your way.

Definitely call both schools' admissions office and ask; it's often not that clear from the websites. A couple of years ago my son did apply ED and EA, but only after he called each school (anonymously) to make sure it was OK.
