Based on a thread from another forum, I realize I may have asked a question that cannot be answered. We didn’t realize that this was the first year for LOA’s to be used.

So, now we are wondering if getting deferred means that the LOA is revoked, or if it will still help an applicants chances in RA.

I have to wonder if the quality of applicants for EA (since they are more competitive than recent years) had a significant affect on the final evaluation of (LOA) applications.

My son has been waiting for the day of the appointment (hopefully) for many years and we are here on the 24th and heard nothing yet - is this unusual? I am a mess waiting because I am not sure what we will do if it doesnt happen - he is ~1300 SAT, avg 27 Act - went to AIM - USCG officer recommendations - not sure what else we could have done but he hasnt heard and the USCG has been his choice since ~8yrs old - is it likely that appoinment letters could be this late or are we looking for the little envelope? and a bad little envelope, any thoughts ?

All EA decisions have been mailed and should arrive by today, perhaps Saturday due to unforeseen massive blizzard snow storms in parts of the country.

773 deferrals to Regular Admissions
108 full appointment offers
60 conditional appointment offers
33 CGAS scholars offers

We received the wrong packet - the deferral letter !! Anyway after the initial disappointment my son is determined to prove he is the right candidate to the review board and receive an appointment. While in the deferral stage waiting for the regular admissions what can he do to better position himself for the regular admission review? He is planning on more reference letters, more info on his extra curricular activities and a new transcript. I am trying to guide him appropriately - what else may help? Also are there rolling admissions or not - cant find on the website any info regarding this. Thanks for anyone’s help / guidance.

We received the wrong packet as well…the defferal letter. ;(

My D is very disappointed…

First of all, are all the deferral letters the same? Do they all recommend the same items? Hers was an updated transcript, new SAT or ACT scores, Additional letters of recommendation.

Or are they customized to the areas in which they saw your app as needing improvement?

She is not a great test taker, but is strong academically.

3.5 unweighted
24 ACT
1590 SAT
Captain of her State ranked softball team
Volunteer
Attended AIM
Attended Joint command summer leadership school twice
etc.
Her recommendations and essays were great. in my opinion…

What are the odds of actually getting in on regular admissions? How many more apps usually come in for RA?

How about an interview? We asked about getting one for Early action, but the Admissions officer said not to worry about it at that point. Now he is not an Admissions officer any more?.?

We are in Missouri, if she were to interview, who would she interview with?

She should update her file with anything the deferral letter recommends, regardless of whether it is a form letter or customized for her - any new leadership positions, SAT scores, or letters of recommendation will get her filed reviewed again under RA.

The class size for 2014 is projected to be around 290, so if the acceptance rates from EA are high, there will be fewer RA appointments, but if things hold as they usually do, you can expect somewhere near 230-240 more appointments to be awarded during RA.

As for an admissions interview, she should contact the Admissions Officer who covers Missouri (ENS James Kopcsay, at 860-701-6336) and he will forward her interview request to a local AAP to conduct.

Good luck to her, and don’t forget about the CGA Scholars program - probably a few more appointments coming for it as well.

The CGA Scholars program is prep school. The USCGA uses New Mexico Military Institutre (NMMI) in Roswell New Mexico, and Marion Military Institure in Marion Alabama.

You don’t apply directly to CGAS, you are offered a spot if you show leadership and/or leadership potential, have outstanding athletic abilities and/or other attributes, but you need additional academic preparation in order to better ensure success at the rigorous academic load at the USCGA.

It’s not a “crash course.” it’s a year of intense academic, physical, and military training that will prepare you for the USCGA, filling in whatever “gaps” may exist that prevented you from receiving a full appointment in the current year.

After successfully completing a year at either prep school, a CGA Scholar is fully qualified for an appointment, and typically all will receive appointments to the next incoming swab class.

It’s a great opportunity for those who otherwise would not receive direct appoints due to low SAT/ACT scores or a transcript that may be lacking in some essential academic courses.
