Accepted with $32k Presidential Scholarship plus is a finalist for $35k Cambridge.

Note: In a previous post I referred to this as the Bellingrath scholarship. That was the name her GC told her. He used to work at Rhodes so didnā€™t realize theyā€™ve restructured the merit awards a bit since he left. I donā€™t care what it is called as long as I know the $$. Haha

My son was accepted and received a $22k scholarship, a small Rhodes grant, and the letter also listed the TN HOPE scholarship. He did submit his ACT scores. If he decides to go to Rhodes, he will run on their Cross-Country/Track team!

I am in the same situation (awarded Presidential plus a finalist for Cambridge), and I was not aware that the $35,000 would be additional. I thought it was be $35,000 instead of $32,000. How do you know that it would be additional?

Interesting you should ask! My D was told by her GC she was a finalist for a full ride earlier in the week. Then we got the official acceptance and I questioned the wording of the acceptance letter, but my D was certain about what she was told. So the only way that makes sense is to have stackable scholarships, which is not typical at all. So I emailed her AO for clarification but havenā€™t heard back.

After fearing my D may be completely wrong and I shared possibly erroneous info on CC (without waiting forā€¦ let me see that in writing!) I decided not to cause more confusion with speculation until I had a solid answer not based on a verbal communication with my D. But now that itā€™s brought up, this is my concern: Her GC has a connection with Rhodes. He was notified she was a finalist for their top scholars award. That used to be the Bellingrath full ride; however, that is no longer referenced on their website so I think he may have assumed. THIS IS MORE SPECULATION ON MY PART and Iā€™ve already possibly messed up.

I will add this. My D is a semifinalist for a full ride at another school that has a similar interview process. So that caused me not to question her understanding initially. It seems odd that resources would be allotted for a committee-reviewed interview that nets an additional $3k merit award.

I feel a bit hesitant to share that thought because it is so privileged and we are so extremely grateful for where she stands now with the Presidential. Iā€™m just trying to figure out our possible misunderstanding as (while Iā€™m proud of my kiddo) Iā€™d never want to share incorrect information.

Congratulations to you! Letā€™s figure this out together! Rhodes is one of my Dā€™s top choices regardless but with possible med school in her future every little bit helps.

@cambam05 I finally heard from the AO with an explanation. You are correct and there was a misunderstanding in the verbal communications with my D. Rhodes no longer has a relationship with the foundation that funded the Bellingrath (full ride) so now their top scholar merit is the Cambridge and it replaces any previously awarded merit scholarships if selected.

Sorry for the confusion. And for possibly getting your hopes up (like my D felt early last week).

Note: I edited my previous posts so any future readers of this thread donā€™t get misinformation and possibly miss the correction further down the thread. Apologies for jumping the gun. Note to self: Get it in writing!

Any word on admitted students day(s), either in person or remote?

Yes. They have virtual and in-person (Fridays). The link is on the portal landing page in the second paragraph (ā€œadmitted student programsā€).

Hi we are from New England and I discovered Rhodes by looking for colleges that offer mock trial teams. My son applied without much knowledge of the school but strangely they have given him an excellent package and now he is considering it. Is this where I would post asking people to provide their opinions about Rhodes? He is interested in non science liberal arts - politics , psych etc. strength is verbal -mock trial, debate etc. thank you and Iā€™m sorry if this is not the right place. Iā€™m not on any Social media ( no not even Facebook :joy:) so I donā€™t understand the rules. Thanks!
