Also a white male

I am not sure if I forgot anything, but whatever input I can receive would be greatly appreciated. I also do know that I am below 50% mark for CoE so do not hold back. I have already been accepted to Penn State Engineering (rather quickly 1 week after sending everything in) and also Purdue Engineering. I also know that applying OOS to U of M is extremely tedious compared to in state.

Oh forgot to say I am from New Jersey if that changes anything!

@cool12345214 Did you get in? You sure should have.

With both GPA and test score below admission average, it is likely a deferral from OOS.

I got in with a 3.95/31, but that was four years ago. I took AP chem, calc BC, and physics C (mechanics).

Your stats should get the rest of your application seriously considered (i.e., you won’t be filtered out solely due to numbers).

I would have used my essays to do something other than brown nose about how much you like Michigan. Michigan has a lot of fans, and they already know that. Essays should introduce you and illustrate the unique qualities they’re shopping for in students. Essays should focus on what you bring to the school…not what the school can bring to you. They already know how cool the school is. They want to know about you. OOS competition is FIERCE. I think your GPA is low for the CoE, particularly out of state. That said…I love your volunteerism and wish you luck. Also, congrats on Penn State and Purdue! Regardless of what happens with Michigan, it sounds like you have a bright future. Best wishes!

The admission stats for engineering are just incredibly high. They need to re-calibrate the ACT and SAT just for schools like Michigan - the top 2% band is at the 25th percentile and top 0.5% at the 75th.

The admission median ACT was 33 last year, but I have not seen the admission mid 50 yet. As the mid 50 for UMich overall was 30-34, I am expecting it to be 31-35 for CoE last year (vs 31-34 for the couple years before that).

@overthetopmom No, deferred but it was expected OOS CoE… all students from my school who applied were deferred as well… @MaryGJ When I say I expressed my interest i did so in like one sentence in all so I would consider that far from brown nosing but I understand what you mean I would hate to read the essays that brown nose for paragraphs on end… but Thank You! I also got into Northeastern Honors College for Engineering as well! @umcoe16 the stats have changed so much in the last four years… @billcsho I was expecting getting deferred so it was not a blow but I still think its 25 to 75 percent chance to get in or denied in the coming months I think its just too competitive this year and I am at the lower end but thanks to all who commented!

It has been very competitive for years. The OOS admission rate is in the teens. Last year, I know an in state student with similar GPA but 33 in ACT got rejected.

@cool12345214 I got in with a 33 OOS ACT this year, and 32 isn’t much different. I think you’re fine and one of the admissions reps told me engineering looks more at math subscores than others. I’d say the only lacking part of your app is your GPA.

^ Yes, They do take a closer look at the Math section score. The mid 50 was 32-35.

@golfstudent13 i would say the most lacking part of my application is my act score even though my unweighted includes a B+ or two (calculated as B in final unweighted calculation just like u of m does at admissions)… my GPA is extremely high for my school and schedule because grades are not inflated with easy grades in classes they are basically just tests unlike most high schools which colleges can see on ranking what an AP class at one school is like to another but i can understand why you believe that is lacking but thank you for your input

@billcsho yeah there is a lot of weird admissions decisions for unusually highly qualified students for u of m and yes I do agree with high stats for years but they will become even higher in the coming years i think the OOS acceptance rate last year was around 18% and they believe it will be around 15% this year because of the high volume… over 30,000 Early Action Applicants and rumors are they did not get to read all of them even though i do not believe that but thank you for more input!!

@cool12345214 Just for the record, I got in OOS CoE with a 32 ACT and a measly 30 on the Math section. I suppose I made up for it with my AP calc score or ECs/Essay. It has gotten very competitive this year. Hopefully you get in.

@infiniteCircle Thank you very much!
