EA vs. RD

My school doesn't have unweighted GPA and weighted, but your GPA is weighted by AP classes. Long story short, I didn't really care a whole lot in 9th-10th grade, so going into 12th grade, my GPA hovers around a 3.5, including several Bs and a few Cs. I'm taking 5 APs this year which could give me a 4.83 if I have straight As, which I believe would boost my GPA to around a ~3.8 if my math is correct. I realize my resume blows and my ACT was only a 28, which I will retake in September and October. Should I even apply EA? UChicago is my top school no doubt, but I am an extremely uncompetitive applicant, and my GPA will be higher for RD. I know that very few get rejected for EA, so maybe it is a good idea, but I am not sure. I would like to get my October ACT in, but if I get deferred, I could always send that for RD.

It seems like you would, at best, get deferred until April and then sink or swim based on your senior grades – just as you would if you applied RD. If there are other schools you’re interested in where applying REA/ED would be a big help, I’d do that instead. The risk here is not so much that you will get rejected EA but the opportunity cost of not using your early bonus elsewhere.

Well UChicago is definitely my top choice, but it isn’t very realistic for me, my other options are my state school and a LAC that isn’t too tough to get into. Applying EA wouldn’t affect any other apps.
