EA vs RD?

UChi is my dream and total reach school. I was told to apply RD since I am not competitive enough, but I have also heard few people are rejected EA. What should I do? I really don't wanna take the chance of being denied EA, and would rather just wait to get the denial letter later lol.

Why would you apply RD if it’s your dream school? If you apply EA, you can still apply to other schools. The only reason to apply RD over EA if UChicago is your dream school is if you think your first semester grades of senior year could positively impact your decision.

@Careful‌ well I mean it could a small amount…don’t know how much.

From the class of 2018’s stats:
EA acceptance rate: 10-12%
RD acceptance rate: 4-5%

I hope this makes your decision easier (although I got in RD).

Also, almost no one is rejected for EA. Those who aren’t accepted are usually deferred.

@mrtwarner‌ I’m probably a very unqualified applicant on paper. Are you sure I’d get deferred? As I said, my college admissions counselor said not to.

If you are truly unqualified, it won’t make any difference. If they reject you EA, they would reject you RD as well; they defer a LOT of EA applicants to the RD pool, and if you aren’t competitive with that group, you won’t be with the RD pool either. At least EA shows interest and enough organization to get your application in early. And if you are deferred, you can then send in midterm grades, any improved scores, accomplishments, etc.

@intparent‌ it’s just my grades. I tanked freshman year, although there were special circumstances. My test score also is too low, I’ll find out if it improved Tuesday.

Like I said… if you aren’t competitive enough to be deferred, a small GPA boost from first semester isn’t going to get you in for the RD pool.

@intparent‌ but straight A’s or 1 B will work to my advantage. It’s not about the numbers there, it’s about the content.

What are your test scores?

@intparent‌ we went over this bruh.

What? Are you saying it has been discussed on some other thread? Sorry… there are probably literally a million threads on CC by now, I just don’t recall your details. Sounds like your mind is made up anyway, not sure why you are asking for advice…

@intparent‌ right now I have a 1230 on the SAT. And no I guess I’d like advice on how to best strengthen my application and chances, but yes I definitely will apply. So any advice is definitively welcome, sorry if I gave the wrong impression.

intparent, frankly, OP’s test scores are the last things that would post a concern in his/her college application process. Good attitude and respectfulness could go a long way and it will come through naturally in essays.

@theluckystar‌ what are you saying?

Lol… you don’t know U of Chicago. They live and die by the test scores. Trying to catch Yale in the rankings, and increasing average SAT scores (which are already quite high) is one of their strategies. My kid got in two years ago, but she had 2380 superscored SAT, Subject Tests of Math II 800 and Lit 800. The OP needs to REALLY improve scores to get in unless they are hooked in some way that has not been mentioned yet. And… U of C isn’t a place that is looking for “good attitude and respectfulness”. They are looking for quirky and brilliant. It is a somewhat Darwinian place academically, “good attitude and respectful” won’t get you through that school.

@intparent‌ true.

@intparent‌ 1230 out of 1600 lol but still need to improve a lot.

The average SAT for freshman admit is 1530
