What’s with GT’s 52% acceptance rate (USNWR)? I thought it was really selective (down in the low 30’s or something.

I think the slightly higher acceptance rate has to do with the fact that it’s in Georgia.

I wonder what the acceptance rate for OOS is, whether materially different than in-state.

my decision is still not up…??? :(?

In 2006, 65% of freshman applicants go admitted.

Many schools get many applicants who have no chance of ever getting in. GT tends to have a very thoughtful group of applicants, so there aren’t hoards of people applying with zero chance. Recent policies are starting to change that (a few more majors, less emphasis on test scores and more on grades and overall record), Midtown getting developed, much better dorms, nicer buildings, higher rankings.

This is good news for GT: it is going to get more and more applicants, as there are more markets for Tech to enter. Other schools are already kinda maxed out, with little room to grow.

[Freshman Admissions | Georgia Tech Factbook](http://factbook.gatech.edu/content/freshman-admissions) to see the increased competition in the last five years. Has any other school made such strides?

my D was accepted!! This is one of her top choices. She is out of state, 30 ACT, ~ A- UW GPA.

I got deferred. 4.1 GPA 1930 SAT. Classified as out of state but moved to Georgia in July.

who else has this status?
“No Decision Has Been Made”

GT’s acceptance rate is on par with other top public schools. Michigan is 51%, Illinois is 67%, etc. In fact, the only state universities with appreciably lower admission rates are in California (and that’s because of that state’s population) and then a few colleges with very popular majors that Tech doesn’t offer (UVA and UNC).

The high admission rate isn’t because it’s easy to get in, it’s because those schools (the top public schools in their states) tend to be safety schools (both academic safeties and financial safties).

My son was deferred, which surprised us. Perhaps because he was out of state???

31 ACT, with 33 in Math and 33 in English, loads of AP classes with straight As.

Probably hurt my a somewhat poor freshman year, which pulled his unweighted GPA down to 3.5.

The Ga Tech web site says that 40% of deferred are ultimately accepted.

What percentage of students get rejected during the first round?

Tech gives no weight to in-state vs. out-of-state. However the primary factor in admissions decisions are GPA. With a 3.5 UWGPA, it makes sense that he would be deferred. He’ll probably get in RD, though.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen it posted, but from what I can gather from applicants, it’s extremely low. Tech seems to like to be very cautious with bringing people over to RD.

And that makes sense because there are many RD options other than admission that are open to people who don’t quite make it in (summer offer, conditional admission, AASU offer if that’s still going out now that GTS is closed, etc).

Ga Tech’s web site seems to suggest state residency plays some role, which makes sense because it is supported by state tax dollars:

f the number of qualified applicants for admission exceeds the number of applicants who can be admitted and enrolled, those to be offered admission will be selected on the basis of (a) the Institute’s judgment of the applicant’s relative qualifications for satisfactory performance in the Institute and (b) recognition of the Institute’s special responsibilities to the residents of Georgia.

AP Scholar with Distinction

GPA – unweighted 3.3 (would be higher on GT scale because of 12 AP courses)

Wow nuum I’m surprised your son got deferred. He has a terrific ACT but maybe his GPA is what got him.
