Has anyone ever taken the early action/decision route when auditioning for schools? I've heard it can improve your chances of getting in, but you can't apply anywhere else in the meantime?

Early action is different from early decision. Early action just means you apply/audition in the fall and hear back by the end of the year (typically). It is not binding and you don’t have to accept the offer until May 1. You may apply to as many other schools as you want.

Early decision is a binding offer which must be accepted within a certain time frame. If you apply early decision, you must accept the offer and withdraw any outstanding applications at other colleges. IMO, you should only apply early decision if you are absolutely certain that you want to attend and that you can afford it even without finanical aid.

If you can get your material prepared, I would suggest you apply/audition early ACTION (not early decision if you plan to audition for other schools) to perhaps a couple of programs on your list, if they allow it and you can swing it. Should you be accepted to one of those programs before the holidays, it makes your later auditions more relaxed, knowing that you’ll be going to college SOMEWHERE for MT/Theatre. Plus, an early acceptance might also allow you to eliminate applying to your safeties.

The only school I know of where “Early Action” is an option for MT majors is Elon. Are there any other schools that you know of?

There was some recent discussion about this on the Preparing to Apply thread:

I would at least APPLY early action whenever you can, because then you know ahead of time whether you are accepted academically or not- saved me a lot of stress last year!

OCU has fall auditions and you will hear back by Christmas. I’m not sure they call it Early Action, but essentially it is.

^^^I know Hartt and Point Park also have fall auditions and will give you an early decision, but you also have to apply early. Again, not sure they call it “early action”, but it works the same way.

Roosevelt also has early action auditions for both MT and Acting. That is my top choice. I’ll be applying as a transfer, and I’ve heard there are even fewer spots for transfers in MT and Acting programs.

Thank you all for your insight! I will definitely be doing my research on this.

I think you can do it also with James Madison. You won’t hear til about 2 weeks before the RD kids do but it can be helpful when you are waiting for a yes from somone!!!

If you apply to the university early action, what effect does this have on the unified auditions? Is it beneficial to apply early action for unified schools?

I am not too sure that ANY of the Unified schools allow MT applicants to apply early action…

-EJ

There are some schools that attend Unifieds that have EARLIER AUDITIONS (so you may find out sooner), but if you are attending Unifieds, then you are not attending an early audition.

I may be wrong, though.

RE: post #10… if a student applies EA academically to James Madison, they will know if they have been admitted academically before they audition in January. Those admitted EA to JMU who also auditioned for the MT or Theatre programs will find out if they have been admitted to the programs 2 - 4 weeks before RD applicants… late February to mid March rather than late March early April. This does not mean those EA applicants have a leg up in admissions to the programs. Just that we can notify them sooner.

There are also scholarships at JMU … Like the Dingledine… which require EA application for consideration.

D applied ED to her first choice school last year (Northwestern) so when she was accepted she pulled her auditions for the 11 (IIRC) BFAs she was applying to. She was able to apply to all the other schools, just not to follow thru once she was admitted to NU ED.

D also did early auditions (Nebraska Thespian Festival and a local unified-type audition) so she had several BFA offers props to the NU ED, so that is a possible route to an early decision as well.

She also has a talented MT friend from MPulse and YoungArts who pulled all planned auditions after an EA acceptance to Yale, and FOF who is an MTrecently on Broadway who was accepted ED to NU but got much better financial aid to Princeton (EA I assume) so will matriculate there.

Good luck to any here who have applied either EA or ED! I know D has several MT friends who have (they applied to Northwestern and Yale), and I think they may be starting to hear any time now.

Fingers crossed for all of you!
