Is it possible and/or wise for one planning to audition in the winter to check “early action” when submitting the Elon application?

Early action is good at Elon. You would know about academic admission in Dec. Otherwise, if you audition in the fall and get into BFA MT, that MT admission is pending academic admission, which you wouldn't know until spring.

There is no downside for early action, in my opinion.

Please note that admission to the MT program is a separate process. This works okay with early action, because early action is not binding.

Early decision is not recommended when they have to audition separately. Early decision is binding if one is accepted academically, and the student would have to go there regardless of whether admitted to the BFA program.

MamaBear - my D applied EA for Elon last year; it was the first BFA (college) audition on her schedule, and she insisted on scheduling some auditions early, because she was eager to know something by Christmas. If you tick the EA option, you are able to confirm academic acceptance online in December. I don't think that there is a drawback per se, although Elon did refer in their MT acceptance letter that they were looking for a 'yes' or 'no' by mid January and I really don't know if this would have been negotiable. My D opted in the end for a different program, but really loved Elon!

MT and Eric:

If my dd's audition is not until late February can she still check Early Action??

thanks!

Mamabear, Yes, she can apply EA, because that just means that she will know her academic admission status in Dec. With her audition in Feb., it will be March before she knows the status of being accepted into the MT program.

The one great advantage to early action, for those of you who took that option, is that you will know if you are elgible to attend Elon if you are accepted into their BFA programs. I have heard of stories from several schools where kids come home from expensive auditions only to find they are not academically elgible. If you apply EA and have a later audition date you will know if you are elgible. In addition, my understanding after coming back from the audition and Open House, is that if you are accepted into Elon but not offered a BFA slot you can change your major to BA Theatre Studies or undecided if you fall in love with the school. Most of the classes are open to non-majors and it is something to think about...if a BFA is not an option.

I asked the question I posted here of the admissions rep for our area in October and she urged us not to apply EA unless we also auditioned at that time.
