Here's my problem. I want to do early action to a few of my schools (university of scranton, fordham, villanova, st. Joseph's) to just have that relief of knowing I'm accepted, but I feel like some of my stats could use improvement.

I'm ranked about 30/270 and after the first quarter I'll move up.
Also I'm waiting to see if I'm going to get a leadership position in my school's lit mag. (I know this isn't incredibly significant, but still it means something.)

So should I just do early action or wait and do regular decision when my rank improves?

Check to see if the schools allow you to apply Regular Decision if you are rejected EA. If yes, then there's no harm in trying. If not, then you might have to think about it a little more.

If you have the stats, apply early action. Then, send admissions any extra information that you accumulate along the way. I believe it is probably by November 15th for Villanova. You probably have a little longer for St. Joes. Call the admissions offices to find out the last date they will accept new information to your application to be safe. Last year, S2 applied early to some of the same schools to which you are expressing interest. He was selected to attend a seminar which he felt was important for admissions to know about, so that's what he did.

I think if you are deferred EA at Nova, you go into the regular decision pool.

I have the stats for University of Scranton and Saint Joe's, but I feel like my SAT's are average for Fordham and slightly weak for Nova. 1940/1310 (I took them in november and I'm not really sure how much I improved, maybe low 2000's)
I believe my first quarter grades come out by the 15th.. so I'll have to look into that.

Your stats are probably more in the range of a regular decision for Nova, but I would still apply early, you never know. Sounds like you are a match there. Isn't there a space on the common app that allows you to note that you are taking a Nov test? How early in Nov is the SAT?
