My son applied early decision to one school, application due November 15. Another school, his second choice, has an early decision II option (due January 1). If my son is denied or rejected by his first choice, he is no longer bound by that school, so may he apply early decision II to his second choice school? I went on the website and it's not clear to me. Thanks so much.

If your son is rejected or deferred by his ED one school, he can apply to his ED school as well as submit RD applications. IF he is accepted EDII, then that will be binding.

I have a similar question - what about the following scenario? He applies ED1 and gets deferred. He then applies ED2 at another school. If ED1 comes back and accepts him in the RD cycle, and ED2 also accepts him, which one is he bound to?

@brghtlght - He is bound to the ED2 school.

I agree with @readytoroll, that is how it works. He is free to apply EDII if he is rejected or deferred by his ED1 school, but he MUST attend the EDII school if accepted there.

If accepted to the ED 2 school, he must withdraw his applications to all other schools. He’ll never know if he would have been accepted in regular decision by his ED 1 school.

Yes. If accepted to the ED school, you must withdraw all applications and not make any new applications. You are right if accepted EDII he will never know if he would have been picked up after being deferred at the ED I school. Keep in mind that the premise behind ED is that in exchange for an early decision, if admitted, you attend.

If your son gets in the position that he is deferred ED I and wants to know if he has a chance of being admitted in the RD round, then he should not apply to any school EDII.
